This is definitely a job for a professional. Besides the issues of why it needs to be charged, especially if the charge is low enough to prevent the compressor from engaging, we mortals cannot do a decent charge at home. If the charge is 10% too low it will starve the compressor of lubrication; if a few ounces too high it will slug the compressor with liquid. Both ensure an early compressor death. It is impossible to determine state of charge with gauges. With compressor replacement / recharge costing $750 - $1050 for your Durango it is an easy choice.

The compressor should start on its own when the system pressures to a certain amount. Locate the low pressure cut-off switch and jump it with a paper clip.
