Do you think this is fair?

I walk my cat on a harness and leash every day in the local park, and it is legal for me to do so. It is law here that all dogs/pets must be on a leash anywhere they walk in a public area. Some dog owners are so irrisponsible and let their dog go without a leash. This means other dog owners, people with young children, and people walking with their cats are in constant danger of loose dogs harressing them. How do we get people to be responsible and put their dog on a leash??????? When can the rest of us walk our pets in peace without being bothered by irrisponsible people and their dogs???????????

Update:

Because my cats are indoor cats I walk them daily. Here we are not allowed to let cats roam, and I want to ensure their quailty of life as well as giving them an opportunity to experience being out in nature. They both love it very much. Our cats are ok with dogs in the park as long as they are on a leash. It is when they approach us directly that cats get scared, otherwise they are so used to meeting people, children and dogs.

Update 2:

I did complain to the city council but I did not have the persons address, name, or photo proof of the event, so legally I can't do anything. Nowadays I always carry a camera so I can take a photo of dogs not being on a leash. I also carry a stick so I can lash out of any dog that may come near my cat.

But the thing is; I should have to do that.

Update 3:

I disagree that cats don't need to be walked. Cats also need excercise, and although you can give them that through playing with them, still they also need sensory stimulation. Indoor cats are often very much deprived of that.

Update 4:

Thank you to everyone for giving me ideas. I understand that some people don't realize that you can walk a cat on a leash. My main point is; I pay the city council registrations fees for my cat same as dog owners pay for their dogs, but it seems that people feel cat owners don't have the same legal rights to walk in peace in the park. Well we do. So to all dog owners; we all love our pets, so please consider always taking your dog out on a leash instead of letting it run free.

Update 5:

no i don't think that is fair (and i really don't care for cats at all) cuz you have every right to walk your pet of choice without having to fear ... i would put animal control or whoever you call on speed dial on your phone to report unleashed dogs and every time something happens, immediately dial on your cell phone ... constantly leave your name ... and keep records of how often you need to call ... and if it continues, a letter to the city stating every incidence ... because i agree, you pay money for your cat, you are being super responsible by having your cat outdoors safely on a leash, and you should not have to fear a public space ...

Oh my god i have to go threw this every morning in my apartment complex! It's so irratating that i will be walking my two dogs and some idiot will let his dog who is not on a leash run up to m y dogs then i have to deal with my dogs being scared and getting tangled in the leash smh.I just don't understand it's not fair that people choose to not follow the rules especially when it comes to a unleashed mean dog.I chose to call the owner of my apartment complex and they told me they would send out a notice, you can probably contact the park managment. They take things like this very seriously because if someones dog were to bit you you could sue the park(They Do Not Want That On Their Record).

Do they not have phone numbers for park officials posted? My park does. I called them once on a guy that had his dog running loose around the playground. Call animal control ans report loose dogs in the park.

I would not walk a cat in an area filled with dogs. Unless the dogs have been socialized to cats it will likely cause the dogs to go nuts wanting to get your cat. My neighbors walk their cat in the yard and up and down the road.

  • You'll have to muddle through like the owners of aggressive/fearful dogs and just block your cat when someones' dog runs up to you.

If the owners won't even obey the law, then they're not going to listen to some "crazy cat-walker". I had to take my 17 year old blind cat for walks, and just stuck to the street so that the dogs I did bump into were leashed.

ADD: Contrary to popular belief (heheh), it's common for cats to be taken on walks. You can buy harnesses and leads for cats just like you can for dogs. I just used a puppy lead, though. I wasn't most happy walking the cat. Felt a bit silly. ;-)

I would see if I could get ahold of Animal control. Tell him/her and maybe they can do a ride threw to see what is going on. Where I lived before we had a great one. Here it is rural and I have not seen any...

I don't believe you get a cat to walk on a leash.
