I am connected to the internet, but nothing will open?

Yesterday, I was using firefox when my computer restarted itself randomly. I was tired so I shut it down and went to sleep. But now, even though I am connected to the internet I cannot open anything other than task manager and folders. When I try to open a browser, it just doesn't open. No message or anything. When I am looking on task manager I can see that I am not receiving anything the internet sends me. Does anyone have a solution to this (I am typing this on an alternate computer)?

Update:

The others in the household have no problems connecting, it is just me. We all use the same internet.

Update 2:

I have tried opening in safe mode, however safe mode doesn't work.

I wouldn't be worried about the internet at this point if all you see is task manager. If you are missing your start menu, and all of your desktop icons, in task manager, click on the file menu, then new task. type in explorer and press enter. If this doesn't populate the screen with anything, you might have a windows problem. When you first turn on the computer, before it loads i to windows, you can press F8 to bring up the startup menu. Try loading into safe mode, and if that loads up, then shut down properly, and power back on again. If it doesn't start windows normally, then I would seek professional help, or re-install windows. Restarting the router has nothing to do with this problem.

You might check your router by unplugging it for about 1/2 minute and then plugging it back in. That will make it reboot.
