Give The Band a try. Yes, that is their name: The Band. They're pretty good. Rolling Stone ranked them top 50 all time and I'll tell you I doubted it at first having never heard of them, but they're really good. Let's see, they back Bob Dylan when he was at his peak in the Sixties and they were so good they were able to turn down Eric Clapton from joining the band. Their first album Music From Big Pink is just awesome yet sounds like it was thrown together in one day. The track The Weight is a song most everyone recognizes even if they've never heard the name of the song or of The Band. Chest Fever is one of the first songs in rock history to heavily use organ in a non-psychedelic way. Their second album also named The Band is also great. Both are probably in my top ten albums. I will admit though they aren't for everyone as they didn't do crazy solos, fast songs, or crazy riffs. They were more of the band that just tried to have each song tell a story and it works so well. I recommend personally watching the movie The Last Waltz which is their final concert and is directed by Martin Scorsese (he did the movie The Departed just in case you don't know who he is).

Slipknot. Back in the 90s, they were something new that no one had ever seen or heard before. They were innovative, and helped to popularize a genre that's generated some great bands. Their music managed to be sad and heartbreaking, while still keeping that fast angry sound.
