Scrubbing - Eeking noise on 2010 honda civic. has about 38000 miles. noise stops when brakes pedal is pressed?
A few days ago our car began making a scrubbing noise. My wife thought it was coming from the ac but when i drove it i heard the noise and turned the a/c and fan off. it continued until i depressed the brake pedal. I will check my brake pads to see if they are worn. Any suggestions? if i press the brakes lightly the tone/pitch of the noise will change. when it is pressed hard the noise will stop.

Brake pads come with a little metal tab that's along side the actual pad. When your brakes wear down to a certain point that tab sticks out and when it comes onto contact with the rotor it makes the noise. It's an audible warning to replace your brake pads.

some brake pads have a wear indicator its a metal tap that sticks out and starts touching the rotor when the brakes wear down to a specific point. This is possibly what you are hearing so have the brake pads checked to see if the wear indicators are touching the disk. Usually it starts on the drivers side first.

have a shop do an inspection and cleaning. that should eliminate or let you know exactly what is going on. brake dust will make a noise also.
