Is Tel Aviv the capital of Israel?

According to The Guardian, a British "news" paper, Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel.

One might expect the citizens of a nation, ANY nation, to know where is that nation's capital.

A man recently went to Tel Aviv with a news camera, and asked many people where is the legislature of Israel in Tel Aviv, including a taxi cab driver to take him to the Parliament in Tel Aviv, and the mayor of Tel Aviv, is Tel Aviv the capital of Israel.

They ALL said, the government of Israel is not in Tel Aviv, but in Jerusalem.

So, here is the question:

Is Tel Aviv the capital of Israel, as according to a British "news" paper, or are the residents of Tel Aviv correct, in saying that the capital is not there, but in The ancient capital, Jerusalem?

Update 2:

@ MaCeDonIan PhaLanX, you spelled that wrong. The word you were looking for - the word most people who know me use - is spelled " 'ae arr arr oh gee 'ae en tee". Otherwise, you are correct; I do have a schwanz.

Zvi, you are correct too, and yes, I was making a point. Since when do reporters know more about what the capital of a nation than do the residents of that nation?

Of COURSE the capital IS Jerusalem.

Those who don't know that are ignorant. Those who don't like it can go permanently visit aitch 'ee double hockey sticks.

I know Jerusalem is Israel's capital.

All the worlds major encyclopedias (Columbia, Britannica, World Book) and the worthwhile dictionaries (Merriam-Webster, Random House, American Heritage) list Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

This is exactly how the CIA World Factbook, published by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, handles this issue in its profile of Israel. "Major cities - population:

    Tel Aviv-Yafo 3.219 million; Haifa 1.027 million; JERUSALEM (capital) 768,000 (2009)"

Just like some Muslims don't want to recognize that Israel exists, some journalists don't want to recognize that Jerusalem is (and always has been) the capital of Israel.

And probably for the same reasons.

I suspect you already know that, but are making a point. And it's a worthwhile point to make (though at least one person seems to have missed your intent.)

NO ! It was Jerusalem and always will be Jerusalem.

Tel Aviv is a very large very well known city but it is NOT the capital of Israel. Saying Tel aVIV is the capital of Israel is like saying that Sydney or Melbourne is the capital of Australia , it isn't correct !!

    Indeed it is my friend!

That's where most ministries, embassies and major corporations are established.

Of course there are some ignorant opinions refusing this, but to all of us away from this 3rd world place Tel Aviv is the capitol of Israel. For the moment at least, since there are many opinions that state, it will not be for long.

    Thank you for sharing

The capital of Israel is Washington D.C. because that's where the Jews are manipulating the US government into doing its bidding.

Don't say I'm nuts because I'm not. I'm the greatest, you hear me. THE GREATEST. End of story. THE GREATEST!
