Christians: prove that Jesus was real and Mithras was not.?

Can you? There is no historical account for either, both had books written about them, both has churches or temples built in their name. Both were 'born in Dec', both were born of a virgin, both were sacrificed... Prove that one is real and the other isn't.

The bible is what is called "Faction" A fictional story set in a factual time and place. Thus the time, place and real historical characters are all correct but the fictional characters and stories are not!

There is not one single mention of Jesus in the entire Roman record - that is right - not one! At the same time as he was supposed to have been around there were a number of Jews claiming to be the messiah - all of whom are well recorded!

There is not a single contemporary record from any source and even the bible mentions of him like all other references were not written until many years after his supposed death!

He was supposed to have been a huge problem to the Romans and produced wonderful miracles but still not one contemporary record?

Even the bible mentions of him like all other references were not written until many years after his supposed death!

Pilate is recorded in the Roman record as a somewhat lack luster man but no mention of a Jesus, a trial or crucifixion that would surely have been used to make him look brighter!

At best he was an amalgam of those others but almost certainly never existed!

Celsus AD ? – 177 AD said that Jesus was a Jew who’se mother was a poor Jewish girl whose husband, who was a carpenter, drove her away because of her adultery with a Roman soldier named Panthera. She gave birth to an illegitimate child named Jesus. In Egypt, Jesus became learned in sorcery and upon his return presented himself as a god.

    Easily.

    1) Many of the Mithras myths actually came around AFTER Christianity started.

    2) The old testament is much older than the books that account Mithras. The old testament contained all the information about the future Jesus (born of virgin, Resurrection, etc). Thus, if anything, Mithra was a copycat of Judaism.

    3) Jesus was not born in December, we just celebrate it in December. Jesus was probably born in the spring months.

    4) Medical professionals agree that the way Jesus' death is portrayed would be scientifically accurate (meaning its not a story, but a real tale)

    5) Historians agree that it is unlikely Jesus was made up as Jesus would be a horrible figure to be made up if somebody wanted to try and spread a religion (nobody would follow a man who supported so many things the culture of the time was so against)

    6) Psychologists agree that the 12 apostles (shown to be real people) at least truly believed they knew Jesus as they all faced torture, suffering, and even a painful death to defend it. If they simply made Jesus up, than it is unlikely that they would be able to endure all that without admitting they were wrong.

I'm not a Christian, but I fail to see how belief or non belief in one god proves the existence or non existence of another. Mithraists at least believed that Jesus was somehow special and probably an avatar of Mithras. "Magus" was a rank of Mithran priesthood and, according to the Gospels three of them made a long trip to pay homage to the child. Which is where the Christian custom of gift giving at Christmas is supposed to have come from. So the resemblances prove or disprove nothing except that Christians have historically suppressed the cults they've stolen from. Mithraism was the first and the pogroms started the minute a Christian Emperor took the throne in 390 CE. But how Gods are worshipped and where their Mythoi come from has no bearing on their existence.

Because I can trace the roots of it.

Mithra (Avestan: Miθpa) is the Zoroastrian divinity (yazata) of covenant and oath. In addition to being the divinity of contracts, Mithra is also a judicial figure, an all-seeing protector of Truth, and the guardian of cattle, the harvest and of The Waters.

The term Mithra is from the Avestan language. In Middle Iranian languages (Middle Persian, Parthian etc.), Mithra became Mehr, Myhr etc., from which Modern Persian مهر Mehr, Pashto لمر Lmar, Waziri ميېر Myer and Armenian Mihr/Mher ultimately derive.

I don't want anything to do with that. You go ahead if you want to. I'm not interested. Does that look like someone you know?

    EDIT:

REalY?! Wow, you do great research!

    Was Jesus born in December?

It's not a good idea to lie about doing research.

Historically looking back, Jesus wasn't actually born in December..that's a myth pagans made up. When you actually do studies, Jesus was born around September or October. I haven't heard of this "Mithras" character before, but I do know Jesus was and is real because how could you explain anything in this world without Him and God? It would not exist..God created it all then sent Jesus to save it all...Want more answers? Read the Holy Bible:)

Christ was NOT born in December, the Catholic Church only decided to celebrate his birth in December because that's when the pagans held their biggest holiday. The cult of Mithros died out by the time that Christianity was able to actually build buildings of worship in the name of Christ, this happened several hundred years AFTER the death of Christ when Constantine made Christianity the State Religion.

As for evidence that a Jesus of Nazareth existed, you have the writings of Josephus who mentions him.

Proof that Jesus was real would include numerous unrelated documents, secular and non-secular. historical and biblical. Many other religions also admit that Jesus was a true man who walked the earth and performed many miracles.

Proof that Mithras was not, see the link below. It is overwhelming evidence.

Why? The outstanding level of scholarship on this subject is not enough for you? Then there's NO WAY that you're going to accept the text that I can quickly hammer into this box.

Even the skeptical scholars -- those that reject anything special about Jesus -- are nonetheless certain that he existed, had a ministry, was crucified, and was believed to have been seen risen from the dead. Gerd Ludemann, James Tabor, Elaine Pagels ... the list of scholars goes on and on and on. You don't have to accept Jesus as God to accept the incredible amount of historical evidence for his existence.

Let's call your viewpoint here what it is: radical and unscholarly. Your argument isn't with me or Christians. It's with good scholarship. It's with history. It's with highly educated experts in the field.

Even the secular wikipedia has sufficient proof that Jesus was a real historical person.

    Do your homework.

There is plenty of evidence that Jesus existed. Academia hates Christianity almost as a matter of official policy, and yet it is almost unanimous in saying that Jesus of Nazareth did in fact exist.

Here are some quotes from secular sources written within the FIRST century A.D., that speak of Jesus. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the evidence. Enjoy.

Josephus (37 AD -100) "Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, […] for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him [both] many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [called] the Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; […] And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day."

Tacitus (56AD-117)"Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judæa, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular.

Pliny (61AD-112) "They were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god, and bound themselves to a solemn oath, not to any wicked deeds, but never to commit any fraud, theft, adultery, never to falsify their word, not to deny a trust when they should be called upon to deliver it up. When this was over, it was their custom to depart and to assemble again to partake of a meal--but ordinary and innocent food."

Notice that Pliny mentions that Christians gathered on a particular day to sing hymns to Jesus "as unto a God". That sounds strikingly like Sunday worship to me. What is asserted to have happened on Sunday? Also, they eat an ordinary and innocent meal together. Could this be the bread and wine, which to this day is symbolic of the resurrection?

    Interesting stuff.
