What are my sons rights?

Last night, my sons house was broken into for the 3rd time in a month. He called the state police who not only insisted he was lying, but confiscated over $1550 dollars, an ancient Roman coin (that I gave him), and $5.00 in half dollars. They told him that it was 'suspicious' that he would have this much money. My son, last year, was arrested for burglary. He did his time, and has stayed out of trouble since. Now when he needs their help, they pull this on him. He was not charged with any crime, so why do they get to take his money? Is that even legal?

Update:

Please, if your not really sure, don't guess. I need REAL answers here to get to the bottom of this...

Update 2:

@ Marcus. Yes, he knew how it felt to be robbed the FIRST time it happened to him. This is the THIRD time. If you read correctly, you would have seen that I said he was NOT charged with anything! The money he had was for his rent and utilities that him and his girlfriend saved from their jobs! He is in NY.

Update 3:

He did not go to prison. No one said he was an angel, Michael T. All I wanted to know was if the State Police have the right to take his money when he was not charged with a crime. I could care less about your opinions of the integrity of my son. Thank you, I'll go elsewhere. I should have known better...

Update 4:

And by the way, Michael T. 'Dear Old Dad' hasn't been in the picture for years. You know NOTHING about this family except for what Im telling you. So stop assuming. +

Wow, if this is true, you need to help him and go to their supervisor explain everything. If that doesn't work, keep going above their heads until you get his stuff back. If the parole officer confiscates his things, let the parol officer know also.

He could have $1550 in cash in the house simply because he doesn't have a bank account or can't get a bank account for various reasons. There are many people who keep their money in their house instead of an account.

Marcus is correct. His attorney is going to be able to follow up and answer questions better than we can since we don't know the full situation.

However even though you don't want guesses...here's my guess. Since your son was recently released from prison, my guess is that he is still on parole. Parolees forfeit many of the civil rights we have and even have restrictions placed on them as conditions for parole. My guess would be that the police will be turning these items over to his parole officer who will investigate to make sure your son is in fact staying clean.

"I need REAL answers here to get to the bottom of this..."

Then get an Attorney. NO one here knows the circumstances behind your sons crimes nor the burgularies. IF the police really took this stuff they need to account for it. WHY does he have 1550 cash in the house? They suspect him of dealing?

Now he knows how it feels for someone to come in and take your stuff amybe this is his ultimate lesson.

would it not be ironic if the people who broke into your son's place were his previous victims

Payback can be oh so sweet

funny how Criminals don't like being treated the way they treat other people

and before you respond your little Brat will always be a Criminal and can always count on this kind of attention from Police and Society

    He Earned It

furthermore most people are going to suspect that Dear Old Dad is seeing his son through rose coloured glasses

the little bugger is probably still involved in Criminal activity

Give Marcus 10 points. No matter what other answer you receive, the best one is: HE NEEDS TO CONSULT HIS ATTORNEY.
