Hey I had the sam question a year ago. Here are some tips.
-Don't get your hair cut! There are products for split ends. Once a year is enough!
-Heat protection when using heat on your hair
-massage your scalp with the palms of your hand 1 or 2 times a day
-Maintain a good diet
-LOTS! of water
-Mane n Tails shampoo & conditioner

I am currently trying to grow out a pixie cut that I got last year. I got it cut off from about shoulder length, because my hair was fried from heat styling and hair dye. I decided to start over, and also cut out all dye and heat. My hair is so soft now. I can't wait until I actually get some good length on it. I take a regular multivitamin, and I have a very healthy lifestyle, so I'm sure that helps with the state of my hair. I also use coconut oil on my hair. Make sure it's extra virgin organic coconut oil. It is solid at room temperature. Heat it up a bit, put it in your hair, and leave it over night. When you wash it out the next morning, your hair will look and feel amazing. I do this about twice a week.
So, for amazing hair:
Vitamins.
Regular exercise.
Fruits and vegetables.
Coconut oil.
No dye, no heat.
This works wonderfully for me.
Oh yeah, use sulfate free shampoo! I don't recommend the Mane n Tail shampoo. It dried my hair out pretty badly. I use Gud by Bert's Bees in the vanilla flame scent. It smells amazing and is natural.

:/ aww I know what you mean. Can you possibly tell your mom that a trim isn't necessary when all they're doing is taking off length? Of maybe have it every 6 months. Even so, you can always start taking vitamins (worked wonders for me) such as children or even Vitamin B (helps grow hair and nails) also biotin to keep it healthy. If you don't want to take up vitamins you also have to keep in mind how damaging blow drying and straightening is. So limit the straightener about 1-2 times a week (if any) and always let your hair air dry. Hope I helped? (:

For me, this shampoo worked great. It's called Herbal Essences in Long Term Relationship. Obvi, you don't get long hair right away. Bit, it makes your hair healthy, and helps it grow! (:
Make sure get the shampoo & conditioner!
It's also not that expensive. It's available in drug stores such as Walgreens, Target, Walmart etc.

Okay well try horse shampoo & conditioner. I know it sounds stupid but it works so well for growing your hair fast! Also, when straightening, blow drying, curling, or using any heat on your hair, MAKE SURE you put hair heat protectant before that way it causes less damage! Also try Chi's hair products for damaged hair/split ends.
good luck:)
