That's exactly what studies of the brain have discovered. When you think about what God wants, it activates the same parts of your brain as when you think about what you want. When you think about what other people want, it does not activate this self-referential part of the brain. People who hear the voice of God or feel God within them are just listening to what they themselves think and calling it God. That's why God always seems to have the same prejudices and political beliefs as the person talking about him.
