Talking on same brand of walkie talkies?
Even of they are different models will you still be able to talk to each other on the same preset? Or would it be better to get 4 of the same model (my friends and I want to have walkie talkies to have at our houses to talk to each other) the farthest friend only lives 5 miles away

Even walkie-talkies of different brands will work together. Just make sure they're set to the same frequency (a table should be in the manual). Different brands' anti-interference technologies probably won't be compatible, but if you turn them off, it should be fine.
Modern walkie-talkies can work up to 20 miles away in optimal conditions (meaning a flat field with no walls or hills, which you'll probably never find in real life). Even so, 5 miles should be fine. Use the lower power if possible, so you don't absorb as much energy (everything seems to cause cancer these days).
Edit: High-end walkie-talkies can transmit up to 35 miles under optimal conditions.

Yes, so long as they are made for he same service (such as FRS or GMRS), or general purpose business band programmed to the same channels.
For 5 miles, you will need the GMRS license at least, or look into getting CB radios.
