Christians, how do you know slavery is wrong?
A simple question. Note that using the Old Testament cop-out won't work, as I'm just asking you what you personally think. While you may want to pick and choose from the Bible whatever it is you want, the Bible never remotely denounces slavery (quite the opposite, in fact), so how do you know it's wrong? Do you really get your morals from the Bible?

The Bible is the story of people living back then, it is NOT a mandatory way of life. People back then had morals much like NON religious people today do, meaning, that there was NO set standards on anything. Morals varied from place to place.
People lived in villages miles apart from each other, and most people would not frequent many villages...they used one village, close by and that was it...for all their life. So whatever morals there was in that particular village, that was what people had.
So you see, we do not base our lives on what people did back then, if we did, we would remain as uncivilised as they were.
If a book was written, ( and I am sure many have been) about the slavery in America just a few hundred years ago, that book would not be requiring the current population to also endorse slavery would it? No, it is just a book revealing how life was back then.
Man wrote the bible, and what was happening at the time and how things were, was put into it.
If we had put people on Planet Jupiter in 1996, it would be written about, and so it would be in a book. That again, does NOT mean we have to continue to put people on Jupiter. It is just a story about what was happening at the time.
God did not write these things, man did. And as even as we see men today blaming God for things that happen, man did the same back then, so naturally it was included in the bible.
If we, humans of the Earth in the year 2012....CANNOT keep from blaming God for our problems, and for diseases and sickness....how then can those a thousand years ago, keep from doing it? They most certainly would be doing it and writing about it.
-------
Morals come from the society it lives in. Religion, however, has standardised morals...keeping those that are best for humans.... Dress morals, for instance.
Just because a woman walks down the street with her butt showing, does not mean it is not moral....it means, that it is LOW morals. And the society that sets these morals, allow her to walk with her butt showing. To them, it is okay. Religious wise, it would not be okay.
With Standardised morals, there is a guide on how far a person can go and still be morally okay.
Sex on televisions, used to NOT be shown, back sixty years ago....but today, it is okay. That is NOT religious doings....So don't blame the religious people when children walk around half naked, and have sex at a young age. It is the morals of society that allow this...not the religious morals.
How do we know slavery is wrong? Because treating others as sub humans, is wrong.

Because under the New Covenant there is no such thing: (Note Verse 28)
Galatians 3: 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.''
This is verified also in the letter to the Colossians (Note Verse 11)
Colossians 3: 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
In Christ and in the Kingdom of God there is no slavery.

Because 625,000 mostly Christian men DIED ending it, at a time they
called the Civil War. I believe that indentured slavery still exists.
