Why is locally produced Australian television so terrible?

I'm hoping that the cultural high water mark isn't to be set by the likes of "Packed to the Rafters". Has everyone with any talent left for overseas or is the place utterly bereft of good script writers, both comedy and drama? Australians are always patting their own backs about their sense of humor. Why can't they make a decent comedy?

Update:

Truthful J is closest to the mark. Summer Heights High was funny, but that's a few years old now. You'd have to go back to the days of Simon Westaway being a cop for a good drama.

UK:

Peep Show

The Office

USA:

Arrested Development

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Episodes (on now)

Boardwalk Empire

The WIre

Breaking Bad

Deadwood

Six Feet Under

TV worldwide is having a renaissance. Aus is missing in action, though.

The obsession with reality shows & the more voyeuristic the better. All those panting randy little teenagers who ache for a hint of sex in everything they watch are shaping our TV viewing by watching such crap.Oh wait! That's American TV isn't it?

To the poor soul who thinks the Shire is great, yeah, right! It's just been axed for lack of ratings, lol. With any luck Lara will go the same way.

Anyone who thinks packed to the Rafters is the cultural high water mark of Australian TV has not been watching much Australian TV. The recent Paper Giants on the ABC was excellent and I look forward to Kerry Packer's War coming up on 9 produced by the same company. Andrew Denton's company, Zapruder's Other Films, continues to produce some quality TV and Randling is the funniest Australian quiz show in many a decade.

Where the hell have you been lately ?

Packed to the Rafters is Rocket Science compared to Being Lara Bingle or Gawd help us , the upcoming serve of this Big Brother Crap not to mention someone said that cow Edelsen is getting a look in. Now if you think Aussie TV is rubbish now, what are you going to say when we are subjected to an American trailor trash Bimbo from Texas and her pathetic old husband who was way back 30 years ago a MINOR no body .

Jeez Louise, you aint seen nuthin yet !

I admit, we do have some pretty crap stuff, but Winners and Losers isn't bad. We used to have some pretty good emergency services shows, like All Saints and Blue Heelers, but they've all been cancelled for ages.

But you can't forget the best Aussie show ever - Farscape! Sure, it's been over for a while, but at least it proves we can do some things right.

We've also had some alright stuff in Underbelly, Pizza, Round the Twist, and Sea Patrol.

I didn't include talk shows, game shows, or reality shows in any way.

I thought it was maybe because I am an old codger that I thought exactly the same way about Aussie TV shows. Too many cooking & reality shows, for me.

I only watch the news & some sport on free to air TV. I watch Foxtel because they have a lot of British shows on. I like their police shows & nothing beats the pommy comedy shows. I record all my favourites & watch them at leisure - fast forwarding through the ads & promos.

BTW if you have Foxtel & want to watch a good show, watch Single Handed. It is an Irish Garda police show.

Write a letter to some networks asking for some anti-Irish programming, with accompanying, if not mandatory "xenophobic jokes"...might work ...seems Australians gulp down that racist crap.
