If I hand people their food and they drop it on the ground (totally on their own) should I replace it?
And if so, WHY? It's entirely their fault. There's absolutely no reason I owe them another meal. Is there?
But the princilple DOESN'T apply elsewhere. If you'd just bought a car and smashed it into a pole on your way off the lot, they wouldn't just say "Oh, well whoops let's get you another car" That's ridiculous.
I mean I realize this isn't a huge deal from the business' standpoint, but it does seem incredibly rude for a customer to feel entitled to a replacement meal.

You are right. It is their fault if they drop it on their own. However, whenever this has happened in front of me the item was replaced graciously for the sake of good customer relations.

you sound pretty young... its the principal of the matter, not about who's fault it is..
if a business owner wants repeat business, then they will oblige their customers in situations like the one you describe above and replace the food free of charge

I say Yes you owe them a meal. Their paying DOLLARS on the pennies it takes you to make it.
