Sickle Cell Anemia Question?

So in sickle cell anemia is it that the defective hemoglobin can't carry oxygen or is it that the sickle shape of red blood cells make them unable to get through tiny vessels to deliver the oxygen to tissues?

Or is it both?

I know the sickle shape causes clogging and oxygen can't be delivered to tissues, but i thought the sickle cells can't even carry oxygen because of the defective hemoglobin...

Thanks!

Normally the red blood cells of a person with sickle cell anemia are normal in shape and they normally carry oxygen. But in situations where the oxygen tension is low, they distort, lose their elasticity and aggregate. The aggregation can lead to the various crises that occurs with this disease.

Because of the fact that normal red blood cells ar circular in shape and have round edges (they are known as bi-concave disks) they can hold plenty of oxygen. Sickle cell red blood cells have a crescent shape and therefore cannot carry nearly as much oxygen as normal cells.

Also, because of their irregular shape they can cause blocks in blood vessels reducing the amount of oxygen being transported to the body's cells. This is why people with sickle cell anemia are usually tired.

Very wise question. sure, it really is going to shrink expression of the sickle cellular anemia trait. The disorder to blame for sickle-cellular anemia is an autosomal recessive gene on chromosome 11. someone who receives the defective gene from both moms and fathers develops the ailment. someone who receives one defective and one healthful allele continues to be healthful, yet can bypass on the ailment - a service. If 2 mothers and fathers who're companies have a baby, there's a a million-in-4 threat of their newborn coming up the ailment and a a million-in-2 threat of their newborn purely being a service. The gene is incompletely recessive, so companies could have some sickle cells. human beings of African ancestry are extra probable to carry the trait than human beings of alternative races, so interracial mating could dilute the defective gene and shrink the potential of the completed blown sickle cellular anemia ailment.

Well, they both are true, I just believe that you are misreading it. It's more that the sickle cells can cause clogging and therefore prevent the oxygen carrying blood cells from transferring the oxygen.
