Everyone says "you're too smart for the USMC, you should go Air Force"?
So i've been looking into the AF for a long time now, but the thought of going through Marine OCS and leading Marines sounds more intense and exciting to me. Everytime i look into other branches, my heart keeps screaming "if you don't just try the Marines you're going to regret it." Everytime i try to discuss my future military goals with family and friends they ALWAYS say "honestly, you're too smart for the Marines, go AF or Navy and do something with your degree."
I love the idea of being in the Air Force, but i know for the rest of my life ill have that thought in my head if i would've had what it takes to be a leader of Marines. Does this sound stupid? Am i all alone on this one? It's true i don't want my engineering degree to "go to waste" as they say, but would it really? I plan on getting an MBA anyway. Any thoughts?

The Marine Corps has the same jobs the Air Force has and it takes just as much intelligrnce to work on an airplane in the Marine Corps as it does in the Air Force.
If you don't give the Marines a try you'll always regret it. You can't im agine how many people have told me, "I wanted to be a Marine," and then make some excuse like my mother didn't want me to. I don't know why they tell me that. I just want to ask them why the hell didn't you do it, then?

The stereotype that Marines/Soldiers are dumb is one of the worst out there (I got a 99 on the ASVAB and had a 4.0 all through high school and a couple years of college before I joined). Your eagerness to overcome the challenge and test yourself to the fullest is one that says to me that you should join the Corps. I admit I am biased, but bottom line is the Corps will be a bigger mental/physical challenge for you. However, the Air Force will offer you a lot of opportunities as well. The Air Force is if you want to have a comfortable career and not have to really get your boots dirty (unless you plan to go into the PJs or some other special parts of the USAF). If you want the challenge of earning the title and leading Marines, then by all means, go for it! But remember, life in the Marine Corps isn't gonna be fun and it's not gonna be easy.

There is nothing stupid about the Marine Corps. There is endless technical jobs that you can do. Hell I have seen more intelligence in some Infantry units than a few POG units. Don't let the stereotypical Vietnam "cannon fodder" reputation ruin your interest in the Marine Corps. And these people who say this to you, What the **** do they know? And don't say well my friends dad or my uncle who served in the Air Force in 1984. Leading Marines is a very honorable task. However I'd rather follow a salty Gunny into a firefight than some boot 2ndLt.

It isn't a matter of "being too smart" for a branch, in fact that is just a generalization, and every branch has their good and bad. If you are looking for a career, let's just say that the Marines are very very competitive, and not always let you stay in, versus the Air Force, Navy and Army are more known to have careers. The Air Force offers a lot of on base schooling and "training courses" with lots of hands on with technology, and many many more. And no, you aren't all alone, a lot of people question that if they aren't sure on a branch, and just join one. Honestly, Marines just carry a pride that make people think that, even military members because of how they act towards the branch and again, all the pride. Versus in the Army, the pride goes to the unit, not the branch, I've seen it a lot more in the unit. Marines focus on the "looks," and tough guy mentality. Just be sure on which branch you want to join, and it isn't anyone's decision, but yours..And no, a degree will never go to waste, no matter what you do and both branches offers something in engineering... Personal opinion here, check out all branches, every single one of them down to the itsy bit of information, then make your decision. I was stuck between Marines and Army for the longest time, and I picked Army because it offers a lot more career opportunities, seeing it is the biggest branch of the military. The Marines are not better, or worse than any other branch. Don't let anybody fool you... They all have different missions, and they excel at what they do, so a marine may fail an Army mission (because of the way it is oriented) and vice versa.

The Marines don't go out looking for dummies especialy for officers.
So what do you want to do?
Do you see the military as a way to help you improve your life in the civilian world?
Do you see it as a your path to NASA or a civilan space flight company? In this case the USAF might be the best since they have the most fighters and work with space launch vehicles.
Do you see this as a chance to prove to yourself and others you are some kind of bad@$$
in this case Marine infantry would be the choice.

There is always some moron who comes on here and says, "I got a 99 on the ASVAB." The ASVAB is administered to the bottom 1% of high school students. So congrats, you are the smartest of the morons. Look at statistics- military service members are morons. Lowest reading and math scores, less education than compared to the civilian population. The military is full of morons, the Air Force just has the smarter morons.
