  • How to pay for college when financial aid isnt enough?

I'm trying to figure out a way to help my gf of 4 years pay for college. She's in pre-nursing,has 1 year left of prereqs, and has a 3.78 gpa. She's been at a community college but it's nearly time for her to transfer to a university.

Financial aid gives no where near enough money and she doesn't have a co-signer for a loan (parent's have terrible credit). Out of both of our parents, only one is employed. The others have been unemployed for a little over 2 years now. There are no jobs in our town, and no one has a reliable vehicle to commute out of town for work.

Scholarships are insanely competitive, (even with good grades) and even if she gets one, the surrounding Universities subtract that amount from your financial aid, thus there's almost no point in even applying for them.

We've already contacted each school and no one is offering any help other than FASFA. Even with work-study, she has to come up with $6-8k on her own.

Are there any legal options left? We're both good students, we've never done/sold drugs, no criminal background, not even a driving ticket. I'm an engineering major in my junior year and she's prenursing in her 2nd year. Our parents are just poor and never saved a penny for our college education. We've literally paid ALL college and living expenses on our own,

Any moral/legal suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Trying to diet but parents keep eating my food!?

So i'm a college student that lives with his parents over the summer and I got EXTREMELY serious about getting in shape this past May. I've lost 26 pounds so far, I've been strict on my nutrition and going to the gym 5-6 times a week.

    The problem:

Every Sunday I go grocery shopping for the week and prepare the meals im going to eat by putting them in storage containers for certain days (it helps me not stray away from my diet). Example: I have a big container titled "Monday" that has mini containers titled "meal 1, 2, 3..." My parents keep eating some of my food! I keep asking them to stop but every week something different is taken. It's irritating b/c i buy EXACTLY enough for the week, thus im put in one of two situations.

    1) I find out early enough that something is missing and i can go to the store to replace it

    2) I don't find out in time when it's time to eat and I have to run to grab something to eat elsewhere

It's starting to get out of hand, today with be my FOURTH trip to the store this week! For something I already bought earlier this week! The $$ for food and gas is adding up and i know tuition will need to be paid next month so I'm starting to get stressed out. What should I do?

I've even resorted to buying more plain-tasting foods like plain tuna and plain low/non-fat greek yogurt and it still goes missing.

  • Why does my comcast package have multiple of the same channel?

I'm upset because I just got cable installed last week and now that it's finally set up (had many many customer service problems) I've noticed that I have the same channel more than once.

In other words, I have two-three seperate networks that have the same tv lineup.

Why should I pay to watch the same show on 3 different channels (none of which are HD copies)? And is there anything I can do to get rid of all my spanish channels, I have 4 (and none of them are HD) I have the regular digital economy package so it's not like I have some premium account

  • Military employment question?

As much as I found the original question offensive: "If veterans didn't go to school when they were in the Military, why should they be given a job?" question offensive the guy had a point that i've been asking myself. This is something our society/gov needs to step in and take care of.

We do get quite a bit a veterans that come back with skills that aren't applicable to civilian jobs, and there are vets that just don't want to use their GI Bill, some just don't want to go to college, so what should we do with those guys?

Im not talking about all, im talking about the individuals that have no direct skill sets, with no college education. Those that come back that aren't physically/mentally capable of operating heavy machinery for labor types of jobs. What happens to them, and is it justifiable that they get the position over someone that is more qualified for the position but is not a veteran?

I know vets are known for more than their skills (teamwork, leadership etc) but those qualities don't seem to be enough to get your foot in the door of employment if you have no experience in an applicable field

I don't mean to be offensive I am ignorant to the situation and I genuinely want an honest answer, could someone please shed some light on this?

  • Health Systems Engineer question?

I am a Industrial and Systems engineering major and it's almost time for me to chose my emphasis. I'm tied between health systems engineering or engineering management. Both sound very appealing to me

my question is, are health systems engineers needed at the undergrad level? or is a graduate degree needed? is the position in demand? and what is daily life like for one?

    thank you

  • Industrial engineering student need career advice!?

So I'll be choosing my emphasis soon, and I cant decide to go into health systems engineering or engineering management.

both sound very appealing and interesting, which is better at the undergrad level?

also, is it better to get work experience first and then go for a masters as an engineer?

my plan was to intern next year and then go right into my masters after my undergrad and then finally look for a career.

I've dont all the reading i can, I can't find many industrial and systems engineering forums for students

  • AFROTC and Class Conflict?

So I want to enroll in AFROTC, I tried this previously but my classes were always in the way. This is because for my engineering discipline there are certain classes I have to take in which only one or two professors teach it and they dictate the times. By the way, the Det. that is closest to my university is about a 1-1.5hr drive away, and they don't provide transportation

I was told by an AF Major in the det. that it was impossible for me (he actually ignored my story when i tried to explain to him the situation). However, after joining Air Force forums, other Officers tell me to keep trying.

    So my question:

What option should I suggest to the Det.?

Is it possible to make up LLAB's on weekends?

Should I jump Chain of Command and speak directly with the Commander of the Det?

Is it possible to join a different Det.

  • Feeling more religious lately?

I grew up in a Christian home, once I graduated high school and moved out, i joined the military and I became a skeptic (because i was forced to believe and didn't feel a need to once i moved out) and didn't really believe in religion. I believed in a God, but not in the labels, Christianity, Catholicism etc.(Buddhism for a while actually made the most sense to me even though i didn't follow it).

Anyway, recently I find myself praying a lot randomly. I haven't prayed or "talked to God" in years, but out of no where I feel that I can't get through my day comfortably without doing this, asking for guidance, help etc.

Like I said, this came out of no where, I haven't spoken to a pastor or any other Christian, I haven't been to Church or anything. The thing is, my life has been a lot better since I've started this. I'm deeply into science (im an engineering major) is there any logical explanation for this behavior? or is this religion thing a possibility

No Troll answers please, they will not be considered, that being said, I am open to both religious and non-religious answers just not ignorant ones

  • Tempted to break up with my gf of 3 years please help me!?

Okay before all of you jump on me like "you're such a jerk she deserves better" please hear me out. I've been going out with my girlfriend for nearly 3 years now and everything is perfect but one thing. She's really overweight. I'm at the point now where I am really just not sexually attracted to her. When we first met, I was pretty overweight but I started working out so a healthy lifestyle is becoming something very important to me, and i've done everything i could do to encourage her to do the same

I've tried getting her to eat healthy and encouraging her to workout for years. I've been nice about it, given her time, dealt with her excuses. She will workout for like 3 days and quit, she won't even try the eating healthy thing any more.

She gives me 100's of excuses on why she can't, money, healthy food is expensive etc. but now things are getting better. we're both going to college and getting an apartment together next semester. In this apartment she should have zero excuses not to get into shape, money will practically not be an issue and I am only allowing healthy foods in the house. I feel that if after a year she doesn't make decent progress I am going to break up with her. I've spoken to her about this and she gives more excuses but says she'll try on her terms.

i love her personality and career ambition, but i feel guilty b/c im sexually attracted to and surrounded by females that are in shape. i've been tempted to cheat on her over the years, but i have never cheated and don't think i morally could go through with it. I seriously would marry this girl in a heartbeat if it weren't for the weight

i honestly don't see myself with anyone else in this lifetime, and i really am trying to work with her, i would've left this relationship a LONG time ago if it was just about looks.

So I was thinking if i don't see much progress after 2-3 months of moving in together I would give her a timeline "if you don't lose X pounds/inches in X amount of time then i'm leaving" i know it sounds like a douchebag move but by that time we will be going on 3.5 years together. Like i said, if she would just show just a little bit effort i would have no problem marrying this girl.

is this a good approach or should i try something else?

  • Why join the military after college?

So since I was a kid I knew I wanted to join the military.

now that im in college and doing my engineering degree, i see much better opportunities in the civilian world.

it just seems the older i get (especially since me and my gf of 3 years are getting really serious) the less and less appealing the military life sounds

i wouldn't even get to use my engineering degree

i've noticed that most of the kids looking to join the military in college (besides ROTC) typically have lower grades and don't know what they want to do when they graduate. i mean i spoke to a Marine officer recruiter and he said you only needed a 2.0 to get in, the standard just seems to be pretty low.

everytime i talk to friends and family about it, they always tell me im too smart for it, i don't want to sound like a douchebag im just quoting them. the idea of serving in uniform sounds great but not being ableusing my degree that i've been working my butt off for and the low pay doesn't seem worth it.

am i better off working for a defense contractor or should I apply Air Force like i've been planning?

finally, if you served in the military after college, this is for enlisted or officer (non ROTC or service academy) are you happy with your decision? Do you feel it was worth it? If you could go back in time, would you do it again?

  • Is the ipod touch 5g worth buying?

I've been considering buying a touch, I never really saw a reason for it until I saw my dad's 4g. It seems very convenient, it seems like a portable computer. My question is, is it worth all that money if the 6g is supposedly coming out in a year anyway? Also, is there a huge difference besides size and pixels between the 4g and 5g? I don't really want to spend all that money on something that will be "obsolete" in such a short amount of time

  • military healthcare benefits for family question?

So a friend of mine has a daughter, but is not married to the mother of that child.

so my question is, i know the mother doesn't get any health benefits b/c they're not married, but does his daughter still get benefits even if she is living with the mother?

  • Easy 2 points! Anyone else tired of these kids?

These kids that ask questions about joining the military that can be answered by a simple google search or phone call to a recruiter? ugh

  • Losing motivation to study engineering?

I'm in my sophomore year now,

I think I'm just burning out, I took all 3 calcs last year, the physics, chem and some intro engineering courses, i also took summer classes (more math and C++) on top of working 35hr/week. I just feel i never really got a break and im back at doing more math and physics >.<.

I was fine until the last few weeks, im losing my motivation, any advice?

  • U.S. Navy question. NUPOC vs Navy OCS?

Im a systems engineering student, 3.4 gpa currently a sophomore, I've been thinking about applying to NUPOC for a while now to become a Nuke SWO, but I REALLY want to be a naval aviator or NFO but the navy got rid of the BDCP.

College is getting harder to pay for, Im tired of digging myself in more debt with these loans that's honestly why im considering NUPOC, but the stories of Nuke SWO's kind of make me nervous in pursuing it.

So my question is: Is NUPOC and the SWO lifestyle worth all the money? Or should I continue to take out loans and take a chance and apply for that pilot/NFO slot

at this point in time i don't plan on making the Navy a career (if that helps) i will do my best in everything i do during my time in the navy despite what job i get

  • Everyone says "you're too smart for the USMC, you should go Air Force"?

So i've been looking into the AF for a long time now, but the thought of going through Marine OCS and leading Marines sounds more intense and exciting to me. Everytime i look into other branches, my heart keeps screaming "if you don't just try the Marines you're going to regret it." Everytime i try to discuss my future military goals with family and friends they ALWAYS say "honestly, you're too smart for the Marines, go AF or Navy and do something with your degree."

I love the idea of being in the Air Force, but i know for the rest of my life ill have that thought in my head if i would've had what it takes to be a leader of Marines. Does this sound stupid? Am i all alone on this one? It's true i don't want my engineering degree to "go to waste" as they say, but would it really? I plan on getting an MBA anyway. Any thoughts?

  • From military officer to banking, possible?

I really want to get into private equity after college but first and foremost my life dream is to serve as an Air Force officer (wanted to do this since i was 6).

I've been doing a lot of research on people who have done this, at least into ibanking, but there doesn't seem to be a cut clear way of doing this.

Unlike the profiles i've read, i don't go to a Big Ten school for my undergrad, but I am an engineering major currently with a 3.3 gpa doing AFROTC.

I was thinking about applying to be either a civil/developmental engineer or intelligence officer when it comes time to commission, but would love to fly

From there do my best to get into a top MBA program (pref. Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, Booth)

    Then what?

By the time this is all done, i'd be 30yr old, is that to old to break into banking?

  • Becoming AF pilot getting mixed answers help please?

Real quick, im doing AFROTC, studying systems engineering (my 2nd year)

I was planning on getting PRK this upcoming summer (2013) which would be my 2nd year of AFROTC and 3rd year of college.

My question is, does PRK fix colorblindess? I can see all colors except i have a really hard time with my greens it's not my fault it's genetic. If it doesn't, is there anything I can do that will help me train my eyes to detect those colors over the next few years.

I reading and hearing from various sources that yes it does help and some that tell me no it doesn't.

If this doesn't work out i guess i'll go be an engineer in the AF, but would REALLY REALLY love to fly.

Finally, if i can't fly military, is it possible to fly in the civilian world as a hobby with colorblindness? Keep in mind, i'm not 100% black and white colorblind i just have trouble with certain shades of green, and i always fail that portion on the colorblind test

  • HUGE AFROTC question!!! help?

So, I'm starting AFROTC this upcoming fall doing the 4-year program (starting my sophomore year systems engineering major) I want to be either a pilot or dev. engineer in the AF. So the plan is, do AFROTC, and delay my undergrad degree my "senior" year and take classes towards my masters, so I can finish the 4 year program .

Question 1, am I allowed to purposely delay my undergrad a year, by just not taking that final class required for graduation?

    My question is,

Is there a way, that, after Field training, I can possibly just apply to OTS instead of finishing that last year of AFROTC and finish my degree in 3 years like im supposed to? and, if I do wait and contract through AFROTC and possibly get that pilot slot, if it's possible to apply to OTS at that point, do I keep that pilot slot?

I know these are questions for my counselor, and possibly det. commander, but my college counselor is never much help outside of scheduling me for classes =\
