Why join the military after college?
So since I was a kid I knew I wanted to join the military.
now that im in college and doing my engineering degree, i see much better opportunities in the civilian world.
it just seems the older i get (especially since me and my gf of 3 years are getting really serious) the less and less appealing the military life sounds
i wouldn't even get to use my engineering degree
i've noticed that most of the kids looking to join the military in college (besides ROTC) typically have lower grades and don't know what they want to do when they graduate. i mean i spoke to a Marine officer recruiter and he said you only needed a 2.0 to get in, the standard just seems to be pretty low.
everytime i talk to friends and family about it, they always tell me im too smart for it, i don't want to sound like a douchebag im just quoting them. the idea of serving in uniform sounds great but not being ableusing my degree that i've been working my butt off for and the low pay doesn't seem worth it.
am i better off working for a defense contractor or should I apply Air Force like i've been planning?
finally, if you served in the military after college, this is for enlisted or officer (non ROTC or service academy) are you happy with your decision? Do you feel it was worth it? If you could go back in time, would you do it again?

I enlisted a few years after getting my degree. I wanted to go back to college for a different degree but I couldn't afford it. If I liked it enough to stay in, my goal was always to go officer after a few years. They changed the age limit for OCS for the Army, so officer's not an option for me anymore. But I still love it enough that I'm planning to do 20 years enlisted. I graduated from a tough private military university, completed my 4 year degree in only 3 years, had a 3.19 GPA and 2 minors, got a 99 on my ASVAB and a 1365 on my SATs (back when it was out of 1600). So I'm pretty frickin smart. I had good-paying job that I enjoyed in a city that I loved, but I wanted something different.
The military has paid off my college loans, got me out of the debt I put myself in, introduced me to my husband, allowed me to travel (for assignments and on leave), gave me life-long friends. I absolute love being in the Army. It took me a while to get around to it, but it's probably what I was meant to do.
