When to start buying things for a baby?

I am 21 weeks along and i have just bought a baby bath and a baby sleeping bag. My boyfriend seems to think it's too early but i don't get a lot of income and i thought i should buy 1 item a week and spread it out seing as i'm buying the little, less expensive things and he is buying the non-wallet friendly items! What do you think? Also, I had a miscarraige last year at 6 weeks but didn't find out until 12 week scan and i had already bought 2 toys and nipple shields at 6 weeks and it broke my heart to see them. So am i buying too early or am i okay to buy? I also don't find out whether it's a girl or boy until wednesday. Thanks for any advice!

Update:

Also, I'm not having a baby shower :)

I would not make many purchases until 13 weeks because chance for miscarriage before then is high.

I was put on bedrest around 30 weeks, so I would say you should buy now. I was glad I did my shopping early, because I couldn't do it later, and didn't want to do it after the twins were born either.

I am definitely for second trimester shopping. WHen you can still move around easily, but the baby isn't likely to miscarry. Lots of women cannot be on their feet much after 30 weeks.

My baby shower I got tons of baby blankets, and some toys and books. People did not get many things from my "need" list. Some, but not much. And if you are doing a late baby shower, like most people do, you may not be able to shop after it, or feel up to shopping after it.

You're not buying too early. You are well past the biggest miscarriage danger zone, and it's common sense to space out your purchases a little.

I never get why people say you have to find out the gender before starting to buy things. Most baby stuff is unisex anyway. I don't see why a baby should live in an environment that looks like a pink or blue paint bomb just went off. It's just colour, and there are plenty of other colours than just those two.

Its never too early to buy things for a baby , before you know the sex I'd suggest things that'll run out like diapers and wipes but don't buy all the same size. Also body suits because the first month or so baby's poop all over them, gross I know. Anything that you see at the store get , it'll help. Wait to buy clothes and gender specific things till after you have a shower if your not having one you def need to buy buy buy! Congrats by the way!

I wouldn't buy anything until you have a baby shower. I received everything I needed at the shower and received a ton more after the baby is born. I'm glad I didn't spend too much. I bought a few clothing items and that was it, everything else was given to me.

You can buy things now or just put a certain amount away every week for baby items. If you can't resist spending from your chequing open a saving account or take the cash out and put in an envelope.

    Buying essential things

    - tub

    - sheets

    - other care products

Can be done at any time (as long as its before some of them expire!!)

But usually people don't start buying the crib and toys and even clothes till they find out the gender of the baby

So make sure you buy all the ESSENTIALS first before splurging on clothes and whatnot

i can understand your situation is sensitive but i think 21 weeks is definitely fine to start buying items, especially if you are on a budget. we already started buying items by then as well. just don't buy large items until a little later, as warranties start when you buy the item, not when the baby is born or you start using them.

I had my nursery done at 20 weeks. This week, 27, I'll finish making some art for the walls.

There is no rule. Do it as you like. I was nesting that week so perfect timing.
