vanity: excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, etc²
so i guess we could say that they have pride, lots of it, so much that they don't want to admit the other is better... we could say is a matter of "honor," like a duel between the two.
then he says: all i see is you and me... here he is realizing that she is the one... but because she has "vanity" it is not as easy for him to conquer her, so he plays her game "the fight for you is all i've ever known." This last phrase reinforces the hypothesis that she is very vain (which is typical in women with high standards).
