Would the word "so" be acceptable in an essay/book report?

I feel like it isn't an acceptable word for an essay, but for this sentence I feel like its the only word I can put in there! How could I reword this?: Meg discovered she had love, and IT didn't, so she used her love to rescue Charles Wallace.

Any help?

    Of course it is acceptable. "So" is appropriate for any kind of writing.
