Why is it an educational faux pas to earn all of your degrees (Bachelor, Master, etc) at the same institution?

I have heard it before on this forum.

You can (and most people do) do your PhD and masters at the same school, but it looks bad to get all your degrees from the same school. It's considered 'academic incest' - you only ever have a few different professors. You don't get out, meet new people, work with new professors and researchers, have access to new equipment and fields of study, hear new opinions (you might never find out the rest of your field thinks your adviser is a crackpot until you start wondering why you can't get a job), and make new connections (very important for any job, including a professor). In fact, it looks so bad (because employers assume your own school only took you in out of pity when you didn't get in anywhere else) that many schools, like MIT, won't even consider their own undergrads for their graduate programs.

This does not apply when you're doing a professional programs (med, pharmacy, law, vet, etc) because you won't be working with the same professors you had in undergrad.

i'm not sure who gave you the historic previous suggestion, yet once you totally intend to circulate right into a Masters application in historic previous when you have a Bachelors, why not get your Bachelors in historic previous? in case you do not intend to aim and make it obtainable interior the working international with purely a Bachelors in historic previous, then what's the wear and tear? they are good that a BA in historic previous is in simple terms approximately valueless interior the working international, in spite of the fact that it incredibly is proper education for a Masters application. additionally, speaking from own adventure, a BA in English isn't the appropriate undergrad selection the two for interest placement. i've got held a ton of workplace positions- and that i purely have been given those simply by fact i became into an workplace assistant for the period of school so I had the adventure. i've got executed proofreading artwork and now i'm a grant author, in spite of the fact that it incredibly is taken a at the same time as. i might stear sparkling of the liberal arts stages on the undergrad point till you certainly intend to pursue graduate learn. And no, you do not might desire to significant in historic previous as an undergrad to pursue grad analyze in historic previous. There could be some situations (some universities will require a definite style of undergraduate credit/hours in historic previous to circulate right into a grad application), yet you are able to truly get those by utilising minoring in historic previous or utilising extra then one historic previous class to fulfill your generic education standards, if that's allowed by utilising your college. i could not have extra beneficial than 9 credit from a single branch to fulfill my middle standards. The minor in historic previous could be an spectacular concept. i might nevertheless purely advise this in case you're particularly making plans to circulate to grad college. sturdy success!
