How to connect to Internet?

On my laptop, (I'm on my mums) I can't get connected to the internet even though they both connect to the same box. I tried to get the computer to diagnose the problem and it just says one option :

1. plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection"

WHat does that mean and what can I do? It's not a problem to ask the provider because my mums computer works fine.

THanks IN advance!

Update:

what do you mean an ethanet cord I dont know what that is or where it is.

I'm useless with computers I done the other instructions but they didn't work

Update 2:

yeihaaa (Sorry about spelling) I have checked and it isn't connected and it wont connect no matter what i try.

desirea - i haven't got internet on my phone and even if i did do that, it wouldn't resolve the problem

It means you haven't plugged in a Ethernet cord inside of the laptop. I'm assuming you want to use wireless. If you're running windows 7 go to the start button and than control panel. than Network and internet. Than connect to a network and choose the one you have and click connect.

EDIT: An Ethernet cord is a cord that connects to your modem to your computer or from a wall if you have a router. What windows does your computer run on? Is it a mac? What operation system are you using?

    Are you running Mcaffee antivirus?

McAfee ran an update this weekend that hosed computers around the world, including mine.

You lose all internet connectivity, even though you have an IP address and the rest of the network is fine. No warnings, no popups, NOTHING.

It took me two hours to figure out that it was a McAfee problem, not a Windows problem or a hardware problem

I uninstalled McAfee, and -- Wallah!!! --- back comes the Internet

I reinstall my antivirus from my account - and all is well

No apologies, no OOOOPS! messages - Nada

    Thank you McAfee

When my subscription runs out (126 days and counting) - I'm history.

    *********Update 8/19 1420 PDT **********

McAfee has finally acknowledged they have a problem

Here is a link to their web notice

The notice also describes what actions to take to fix it

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.as%E2%80%A6

    Step one

    Uninstall McAfee

    Joy!!!
