Graphing problem....slopes?

Find the equation of the line that passes through (5, -2) and is parallel to the line y = -1/2x - 2/3

i kept getting y = -5/2x + 1/2 or something like that but it doesn't match up...

    y-y1=m(x-x1)

    y+2=m(x-5)

    y+2=(-1/2)(x-5)

    y+2=(-1/2)x+5/2

    y=(-1/2)x+(5/2)-(4/2)

    y=(-1/2)x+(1/2)

    to be parallel, the slope just needs to be the same so you use the same slope in place of m when you do your point slope equation :) hope this helps. also i checked it on my calculator as well, its parallel to your original line and runs through the point (5.-2) i wish i could show you but that you'll just have to trust me on :)

    First off we already know that we need to remember the equation of a line that's "Parallel" to the line y= -1/2x -2/3. What does Parallel mean? Parallel means that the slope of these two lines must be the same and they must not intersect at any given point.

    The general slope intercept form is: y= mx + b

    M= to the slope

    The only way it's possible for you to have a parallel line is to have the same slope as the other line. This means that we now have the equation

    y= -1/2x + b

    To make your life easy, what I recommend doing is plugging in the point that has been given to you in the problem (5, -2) We know that 5 is your x value and -2 is your y-value. This makes the equation

    -2= 5*(-1/2) + b

    -2= -5/2 + b

    Then you add 5/2 to both sides of your equation and you should end up with

    1/2= b

    Now that we have b all we need to do is plug it back into our original equation which becomes

    y= -1/2x + 1/2

    Hopefully this helps you out =D.

    First of all, you need a parallel slope to the line [y = -1/2x - 2/3]

    To get it, follow the format: [y = mx +b] where m is the slope

    In this case, your slope will be -1/2

    Now apply the point-slope formula: [y - y1 = m (x - x1)] where (x1, y1) is (5, -2)

    You should get:

    y - (-2) = -1/2 (x - 5)

    Simplify to get:

    y+2= -x/2 +5/2

    Subtract 2:

    y= -x/2 +1/2
