800 FLOWERS does work well. Like most big ones, they use a local florist. If you go online to funeral homes in the area, they always list local florists and you can call one directly and save money (obviously the flowers don't have to be for a funeral)

Do a google search for "customer reviews flowers Maryland" or whatever city the recipient lives in, because the flowers will come from local florists even if you go nationwide. Local is cheaper too because they don't pay the nationwide ads. The reviews from real people are very telling.

You can also search directly in yelp.com and citysearch for real people reviews. Don't rely on best-lists because many of those are paid for by the businesses themselves.

After you narrow your choices to a few, call customer service and get into a conversation on quality of flowers and services. CSRs have experience with happy and angry callers and they can steer you away from certain services once they know you are a proactive type consumer.

The link below is for kentucky, replace with name of city/state of your choice

I vote for Pro Flowers too. If you sign up for email subscription, they're always having sales and specials. You can also run a google search for coupon codes to see what comes up. Bouquets can be as cheap as $10.
