When someone is being an idiot, is it worth correcting them?
If someone is espousing clearly ignorant and stupid opinions, like cultural supremacy or religious fanaticism, is it ethical to just ignore them? Should we make an effort to correct them? To what degree are we obliged to argue with damned stupid people?

That depends on what your idea of intelligence is in the world. Lets not forget that you could be the idiot with a condescending opinion of other people.

Perhaps not publicly, though I usually feel obligated to at least try and convince people who sound stupid to reconsider what they say, and tell them the error in what they say. It is better than letting those people continue to embarrass them self.
You don't necessarily have to argue with them, just say what you believe you should say and that's it. It is not worth arguing with such a person for some time of something they do, which you know in the end they will not correct anyways.

If it's just a rant and they just want attention or to rile someone up so that they can feel powerful, then it's best to ignore them.
If they're trying to start or recruit for a hate group, best to report them to the police or try to put a stop to it asap, because THEN there's a potential for danger.

If you feel like you feel like it will benefit your life then go on. In my opinion you'd just be wasting your valuable time. The more stupid people, the more job opportunities for me in the future.

maybe you should try not thinking of them as stupid.
you are not being polite by thinking your better than someone, it's quite possible they don't even realize you're offended by them.
and why does it matter? you cannot control others, simply learn how to realize that they probably haven't learned what you know, or maybe - - just maybe, they already know what you know? and just don't care.
it takes all kinds.
