what is the best word to describe christians?

i would have to say it is: smug. terms like dumb, stupid, misinformed, ignorant, etc really don't apply.

i say this as a former christian and it was even true of me then.

the problem with christians is that their eternity depends on them being "right" and right now.

therefore they have a psychological problem where they aren't too concerned with better understanding. they just feel a pressing need to know in any given moment that their position cannot be challenged. instead of having a floating scale to judge correctness or even a good position on a topic, they feel that they must be perfect in their assumptions. and assumptions are often the only thing they possess because they simply don't have objective reasoning nor time to investigate or be slightly incorrect on an issue.

subjective reasoning combined with unchallengable assurance is pretty much the definition of being smug. believing one knows when it is impossible and not nescesary is extremely smug.

and when they further investigate they throw out all information that disagrees with their position. they tend towards extreme tunnel vision.

i guess this would also apply to muslims.

It would apply to atheists and anyone holding a firm position on anything. It applies to some of people within these groups of people but not all.

Democrats seem incredibly smug and so do Republicans

It takes a smug person to pronounce an entire group as smuang . I have known annoying Christians and annoyingly narrow atheists. If you simply read through the questions here and answers and count how many people are here to bash the opposing view and then post your findings. There is almost no one here who is looking to change their opinions.

My people who call themselves Christians are misinformed and ignorant and have no idea what they are talking about leading people outside of the faith to dislike it even more, being a fundamental Christian I would like to described true Christianity as a people who are "blessed".

Try as I might, I cannot. I have known too many Christians in my life to describe them as a single word, as a single entity. I have known the smug Christians as you describe, but I have known many who were contrite as well. Have known smart and dumb Christians, dogmatic and open minded Christians, liberal and conservative Christians. And, I have met atheists and other non-Christians who could be described by these words as well.

I guess, if forced, I would say "Dogmatic", because even the more open minded, liberal, tolerant Christians still boil down to believing in something that is without foundation.

God/ Jehovah calls it false religion, and is currently destroying it >his way< Governmental chaos. See the "Lords prayer" for examples along with world news

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20)

There are a lot of definitions of "Christian" in the world. For many it means an intellectual belief that there is a God and He has a son named Jesus, who was some sort of Messiah. Lets ignore the worldly definitions and see how the Bible defines a Christian. We must define the word ‘Christian’ from the Scriptures so that we can strip away the historical and cultural from the term and define it the way God does.

A Christian is someone who puts their complete faith in Jesus Christ. This is a "heart thing," not a head thing. Romans 10: 9-11 "If you confess with your mouth, that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believed and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

A Christian is someone that has Jesus living in them, who believes, has the spirit of Christ, and evidences fruit. Also a Christian is someone who is changing daily to become more like Jesus. This has nothing to do with membership in any particular denominationwhich are all man made, but only to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

So a Christian is a person who is totally devoted to Christ, occupied by following and living for Christ.

In Acts 11 we read "The diciples were first called Christians at Antioch as a label for disciples." That is the scriptural defination for the word disciple. A Christian then is to imitate Jesus Christ.

He is a man of faith as he learns and understands Christ's life.

A Christian is not to be content to be lukewarm, but to be transformed daily into his likeness.

He is to be a man of zeal in season and out of season, willing to suffer and to sacrifice; for Christ's name.

He is a man of prayer and desires to follow the Master in continual prayer to the Father.

He is a man of holiness as he follows the Master. He knows that he is redeemed to be holy and to do good works and to follow righteousness. He would not be content with just being saved but seeks to become more unlike the world.

He is a man of love in loving the Father, the brethern, sinners and to show love at all times, in word and deed.

Sanctimonious, self-righteous, intrusive, pretentious....take your pick...as to the poster above me who claims to be spiritually reasoned...I had to LOL at that one. There's no "reason" involved...you simply have faith. Faith is the antithesis of reason.

Tootles: I am a de facto atheist. If sufficient evidence were to be brought forth to validate any claims that were made by them, I would most certainly be open to changing my way of thinking. It's the only actual reason I have for not believing...there's no proof. As a scientifically minded individual...having some evidence to back up what you say (physical, observable evidence) goes a long way with me.

I find it sad that you are trying to justify your position by distorting how we Christians really are. Usually the finger that points outward needs to be redirected towards the self. In other words, what we think we see in others can be a projection of what's really in us.

Nothing that you can say will change the fact that we love God and follow Jesus, who is God, and live His way of life. That's not being smug. It's a spiritually reasoned and guided choice that, incidentally, you once made yourself.

Yet again, as always, old, simple as a child, wisdom trumps the new world.

Why do you look at the splinter in your brothers eye and yet cannot see the log in your own?

First remove the log from your own eye than you can see clearly to remove the splinter from your brothers eye.

    Have a nice day.
