Help! Crossed the jumper cables on My truck!?

My daughters boyfriend was trying to jump start my 1986 nissan hardbody pickup

and accidently crossed the cables putting + to minus and minus to plus. It burned

one fusible link from the battery which we replaced. Now the truck starts but if you push on the gas it

dies. It only idles. Is there another fuse burned? Or a relay? He needs the truck for work tomorrow.

The engine is a Z24.

Thanks

  • Fusible link and the charging system take a beating in that event. A voltage regulator will burn up quickly like that but yours is internal to the alternator so that will be replaced. Since you are in s hurry, arrange another set of wheels. This one is not going to get you there.

If the Z24 is fuel injected, then the ECU is more than likely fried. If not, you probably damaged the alternator or blew the alternator's fuse.

Charge up the battery and see if it runs any better. A dead battery gives a very weak spark. If the battery is dead because of a dead alternator, this isn't a truck you can go very far in. Check all the fuses to make sure.

check the fuel pump situation on that vehicle. Some have two pumps and in that case one could be out and starving the engine of fuel for anything beyond idling. might just be a fuse for the fuel pump as well
