Do you refill your ink cartridges yourself?

I've recently started a project that requires A LOT of printing, mostly with black ink only. The cost is overwhelming, even if I only get my cartridges refilled, and not buy new.

I'm thinking of refilling my own cartridges and I was wondering, if you refill your own, what would you say are the pros and cons? Any helpful advice?

I do understand this will void my warranty, (already done), and could possibly have a negative effect on my printer. I'm not worried. It's lifetime is almost up anyways. As long as I can complete this job without going bankrupt!

Update:

So far , of the first three answers submitted, I am very greatful! Serious, and extremely helpful - all of you! I can see I am going to have trouble picking a "best answer"! Yes I will be sure to buy from a reputable dealer, and yes I will make certain to buy gloves. :)

I definitely refill my own. At first, it CAN be messy, but once you get it right it is not that bad at all. It definitely saves money! Some of the newer cartridges have a chip on-board that monitors the ink-level of the cartridge; Depending on the printer, the cartridge can be reset after a refill by putting the printer in maintenance mode to prime the ink lines for printing. Just make sure that you buy your inks/refills from a reputable source. Even when I buy the more expensive refill kits, it still saves hundreds of dollars over buying new cartridges throughout the year!

OK you check with a printer refilling company to see if your style of printer/cartridge can be refilled easily. I know I had 3 printers in the past number of years. A dell a960 (which can be refilled easily),

a 2nd that I cannot remember brand but I used to refill easily, and my wifes epson styus nx115 (which cannot be refilled easily, without buying a special kit that was expensive). I have the dell with the same cartridge for over 2 years now and refilled it on a number of occasions, the benefit is YES you will save $$$ doing it yourself (a little messy though, you should by a package of Dollar store latex throw away gloves) but over time the cartridge will give out and need to be replaced. If your printing just black then the ink is generally a lot cheaper to refill. Hope that helps.

My dads an architect so he needs A LOT of ink to print out plans and, such. He refills ink cartridges by himself and saves a crap load of money. Pros are you save a lot of money (even gas) and it doesnt take long to refill them. Cons it could be messy and my dad refills them up to ten times, before he goes, out and buys a new one. Hope I helped !
