M-I-L issue? How do I handle this?!?

I loaned my mother in law my $250 carpet shampooer and she broke it! I'm positive it was an accident but when I got it back from her she didn't say anything about it. I think she may have actually BOILED the water (instead of just using hot water from the tap) before putting it in the reservoir because the plastic parts in it are all melted and it leaks like crazy!

I HATE confrontation and avoid it like the plague so I really dont know how to handle this. I love my M-I-L and dont want to cause any trouble, but I need to be able to clean my carpet!!

I guess you have to ask yourself if clean carpets are more important than the relationship with your MIL? Are your expectations that she will replace your carpet cleaner? Is that even an option for her financially? If it were me, I'd just let it go and take it as a lesson learned. don't loan her anything expensive again. If you really choose to push the issue, I would just ask her what happened. I"m sure if you have a great relationship with her then she is either unaware of the damage OR she was afraid to say something in the first place.

Don't be a doormat, tell your MIL what happened and do not loan her anything ever again. Make sure you have your husband wrapped around your finger.

Maybe ask your husband to ask her about it...she is his mother...and would know how to ask her maybe without hurting her feelings. Maybe she didnt even know she did it.
