(read details) What is a good cleaner to clean filthy tile?

I just got a new house that smells like the previous owners let their large dogs pee all over the floors. What cleaner do you suggest to get the tile clean and possibly make the floors/house smell better?

I need something that's not going to be harsh on tile.

Update:

I have a professional grade swiffer-type device, but before I use that, I want to get on my hands and knees and scrub. I need something I can buy at the local store to get all the Nasty off the floor.

Update 2:

TILES, not carpet or wood or anything else. Ceramic Tiles!

Your question leaves a lot of grey areas what are they made of are they ceramic, carpet, terracotta, lino, vinyl? it really does matter. However, I can say that you are on a hiding to nothing if they have peed on the carpets and it has soaked into the wooden floorboards.I had this problem with the previous owners children (and I suspect the drunkard old man) I ended up Painting the floorboards with all of the old scraps of paint and varnish leftovers I could scrounge,at least three coats and discarding all of the carpets and underlays. My problem didn't really surface until the summer, then WOW,having bought the house in early spring.Anyway your tiles, what you really need to do is contact a commercial cleaning supply company, they will for sure give you advice on the best and the healthiest products that are safe to use on your particular floor covering. Sorry it is a bit long, but I hope it helps

I have a Shark Steam Mop. It works very well on tile. You can also wash it with a regular mop and a solution of 1 cup vinegar and 2 gallons of water. The vinegar will no longer smell once it dries.

Vinegar will get the nasties off. It disinfects and will neutralizes odors. And there was no need to yell at the other poster. You truly did not specify what kind of tile. There are tiles made of wood, carpet, cork, vinyl, linoleum.

A Steam machine uses only water but it does wonders getting scum and dirt out of tile, floors, shower doors, etc. without chemicals. I bought one and with little effort my bathroom tiles, kitchen counter, sink and stove look new. Make sure you have a good brush, as you steam clean, brush the scum away and rinse. Nothing stands to a very hot jet of steam, just be careful not to burn yourself. Voila.

Source(s): Personal experience cleaning bathrooms with all kinds of stuff until I discover the steam machine
