I'm very distant from my dad...?

I'm a 16 year old girl and in the past year I've been feeling really really distant from my dad. We have never been close but it's like it's gotten worse in the past year. He always talks about himself and his job and it's like he doesn't care about what I like or what I'm into. We almost never talk now because I get sick of listening to him talk about boring work. I get really frustrated because he blows me off when I try to talk about something I'm into. Plus both of my older sisters also aren't close to him. I've tried being interested in what he likes but im sorry there is nothing cool about fixing computers. i do love my dad and I know things could be worse(he's never hit me ect.) but this really hurts me and I don't know what to do. Advice?

I'm sorry that you guys are having issues right now. Chances are that your dad really loves you too and when he talks about his work, that's the only way he knows how to reach out to you. You've always been his little girl and now you're a teenager, almost a young woman. He might not know how to relate to you, or what to talk about without sounding awkward.

You could try being jokey with him, and say you don't really care much for computers. Also, some time alone with just the two of you might help. Maybe you could go to a restaurant and have a lunch date, or catch a movie together?

If you really think the problem is getting out of hand and you two are drifting further apart, you should broach the subject with him. Let him know how you're feeling and talk about what you guys can do to solve the situation. Maybe he feels the same way.

    Good luck! :)
