What is another word or phrase for "Manipulate"?

We are having a talk with someone who gets very defensive every time we use the word "manipulator" because he insists he isn't like that any more. Well, he isn't as bad as he was but he still does it.

I think it is so instinctive and ingrained in his way of thinking, he does it without even realizing what he is doing.

"Manipulate: implies an underhanded way of controlling a person or situation to have the desired effect that the manipulator wants; it also involves a subtle kind of dishonesty. Be sure that this is what you mean your friend does; otherwise, it is an insult to him. He may be "convincing" to others, making good arguments that they tend to go along with; he might also be very "persuasive," and he could be "controlling," but these are not the same as manipulative.
