    x - 3xy = 1

    Isolate the y term to one side of the equals sign

    x - 1 = 3xy

    Divide both sides by the coefficient of y

    (x - 1)/3x = y

    x - 3xy = 1

    Undistribute x

    x(1 - 3y) = 1

    Divide both sides by x

    1 - 3y = 1/x

    Bring 1 to the right to isolate y

    -3y = 1/x - 1

    Divide both sides by -3 to get y

    y = (1/x - 1)/-3

    y = -((1/x - 1)/3)
