Potty training my son?
My son is 14 months old. I know for a lot people this seems early, but I am wondering how to go about potty training him. I do not expect him to get it right of the bat, if nothing else I am just going to begin introducing the toilet to him, I already bought him his own little potty. I am just wondering if anyone has anything that has worked pretty well? I think he is ready for it. He grabs at his diaper when he messes or pees in it. He is walking around and he helps me with stuff, he always tries to grab the broom when I clean up, and he already helps me put his toys away. He talks ok for only being 14 months old, and is pretty independent. If I ask him to throw trash away or his diaper he does it. So I do think he is ready for it. Any suggestions???

Be prepared to spend months of cleaning up his "accidents" as no 14 month old is capable of controlling his muscles to the point of knowing when he has to go, being able to hold it, walk to the toilet, pull him pants down, pull his underwear down and then go.
Sure, you may be able to get him to use the potty, but he won't be "potty trained."

Buying a potty and placing it in a place that he will begin to notice and recognize it is perfect for this age.. you can tell him 'this is your potty this is where you will go pee pee or poo poo' is about all he needs to be doing at such a young age. Hold off potty training until they gain comprehension skills.. after the age of two - preferably closer to 2 1/2 years old is a really good age. If you give it in one or two good weeks of strong dedication (again at the proper age) your little man will get it. You need to buy cloth undies and clear your schedule for 2 weeks. You wake them up and start with undies and explaining they are not wearing a diaper and it's time to go sit on the potty. The first few days it will be long sits on the potty and no action but after a few days he will stop peeing his pants and start peeing on the potty. You need to have a rule in place - no diaper except for bed time period. The more you slack at helping him during this process the longer it drags on. You must have hit on the potty every 30 minutes all day everyday (again besides bedtime) and by the 2nd week he should begin to run to his potty on his own or tell you he has to go. Good luck. Again, this will Not work at such a young age.

Grabbing the diaper does not mean he is physically capable of potty training. He has to be able to feel the need to go and have some ability to control and hold it in time to make it to the toilet. I think introducing the concept and encouraging him to want to use the toilet is alright. I would not expect him to start actually being able to train yet. You should wait until he is two or two and half.

Introducing him to the potty is a good idea. But I wouldn't start potty training just yet. When he is ready he'll be more comfortable with it if you start introducing it now
