Were the colonists being rational when the decided to break away from England?
Ok, I know this probably sounds "unamerican" but we are currently learning about the events leading up to the revolution in APUSH and I feel like the colonists were being self centered, greedy, and irrational. I mean the whole reason they were mad was because of all the taxes. But the taxes were put in place to pay for a war that protected THEM and even still the English people had more taxes than they did.
On top of that they were all mad because a lot of them were in debt but the only reason they were in debt is because they lived beyond their means when Pitt gave out refunds to soldiers in the seven yrs war and they were to greedy to adjust their life styles back to those of normal ppl after the war.
I mean can you really blame England?
Even if they had representation in Parliament what would that have done? They would have been out voted on everything and the same taxes would have been there.
Seriously, colonists were idiots and as unpatriotic as this sounds... we should still be part of England.
Thoughts?
@K.P.
Most colonists were white and of english descent. All colonists were english citizens. I think the Indians and Spanish are irrelevant as to the causes of revolution. I don't mean to say that we should still necessarily be a part of England, but more that we shouldn't have had a revolution then and there over those reasons regardless of our post revolution history.

Someone's roused haha. I agree with your 4th point, but the others are bad. :(. To say that the entire debt from those wars were placed on the colonies is just wrong because the colonists were paying 2-6% of the taxes that the English were paying. Even if they were paying off all the debt, they should have. The wars were to protect them. Not the Englishmen who ended up paying for it.
Also the colonists had just as much representation as the Scots, Welsh, Irish, and most english citizens. By moving to the colonies they were giving up some basic rights. That's not to say, however that they weren't given "virtual representation" in parliament which they even acknowledged.
Also, the king didn't violate any laws/agreements. His duty was to protect them and look out for the good of the empire as a whole. What would you have done? There was also no formal English Constitution at the time, just an implied one so he could really change the rules based on the laws

the war of independence was an illegal war against a legitimate ruler over TAX RATES , the USA would never support such a rebellion in any modern country for that reason, unfortunately for the american government it established a legal precedent for armed rebellion as a legitimate method of regime change so anyone overthrowing congress can be considered legitimate this is backed up by the number of rebel governments our government has recognized over the years

YOU can go to England whenever you wish... No one stopping you!
1. The Brits, after the French and Indian War tried to place ALL of the debt from the French and Indian War, AND the Seven years War on the colonials.
2. The American Colonists WERE, for the most part loyal subjects until the KING indicated that they were just so much scum that was beneath his notice (THIS ALONE would have broken the accepted allegiance to him)
3. Taxes were placed on the Colonies WITHOUT representation in Parliament, which was ANOTHER agreement that the King Broke.
4. Soldiers OCCUPIED Free and Loyal Subjects HOMES without their consent.
Exactly WHERE to get off claiming that the Loyal subjects were required to remain LOYAL when the Crown was NOT fulfilling HIS obligation to his subjects?? IF you really knew any history and not just "sound bites" from your Liberal Teacher, you should know that even then there were rules that the KING was supposed to go by in his dealings with his subjects. The Brits had already had a half dozen wars or near-wars about that. In One of these conflicts, King John was forced the sign the Magna Carta.. Later King Charles was beheaded after a Civil War!

I don't think we should still be a part of england no way. We moved to a whole new Continent not a bit of land right next to england. I agree that the whole reason the war was started was because they were pissed about taxes but it was bound to happen sooner or later america isn't just made up of English settlers you are forgetting that the Indians were here first and it was actually the spanish who came here first and we actually fought them for land too like Texas and california hence all the spanish names like San Diego, San Francisco Los Angeles etc.... America is made up of immigrants from all over the world not just from England so no we absolutely should not be part of England.

I guess these guys just got together and decided to do something great for mankind out of their own desire to do so more than for any other reason. So they did so. And that is pretty much how it has been for us since then. People do that. They just pop up out of nowhere and change reality and nothing is ever the same again. It happens quite often. What we should be or should have been is no more. We are what we are now. They must have been total idiots to think this would work. But it has up to now so there is something to be said of that. Nothing like having such total idiot types on your side and willing to make a great country for you to live in.

A bunch a uneducated farmers, without the rights of being English, paying taxes without any voice, taking on the greatest Military in the world. Total Crazy. They were insane, insanely brave.
