what is a good white wine to cook with?

I see a lot of recipes I want to try call for white wine to cook with. What are some good white wines to cook with cause the recipes don't say the name of the wine they use. Also, is it safe to give children food that has been cooked in wine?

Match the wine to they type of meat you are cooking and buy a wine you would like the taste of.

Most of the alcohol in the wine will evaporate off, and just leave the taste, and that could spoil the meal for a kid.

There is a wine pairing calculator here where you can select the type of meat, the style of cooking, and some wines.

Yes, it's safe for kids to eat the food, the alcohol has virtually cooked away. Anyway, instead of buying a big bottle of wine, just get a 4 pack of those teeny bottles of wine to use. That way you don't waste a lot when you only might need 1 cup. Use one little bottle, and you'll still have the other 3 in the fridge for other dishes. I'm using Bella Sera pinot grigio right now for the white wine. Chardonnay tastes too much like smoky oaky butter anymore, so I stick with something light and crisp. Bella Sera also has a sauvignon blanc that works just as well. It's only about $5 or $6 for the 4 pack.

I think Livingston Cellars, and Barefoot also sell the 4 packs, the brand doesn't matter in this case. And for the record, those little bottles are prefectly drinkable so they don't break the rule of 'only cook with what you'd drink'.

Use a wine you like and would want to serve with dinner. My favorite is Riesling but I can drink other semi dry wines if a Riesling is not available.

You should get together with a friend or two and do a wine tasting at a wine shop. Wineries also offer tastings so you can see what you like. They will know at the wine shops or wineries, what goes best with beef, chicken or fish.

Beef Burgundy and Beef, Veal or Chicken Marsala is good too, even if they use red wines.

The alcohol in wine will be cooked off so these dishes are save for children. Children may not like them, however, if you use a Chardonnay as this has more of a dry or bitter taste.

Use wine you like the taste of. If you aren't a wine drinker, it's tough to cook with because it goes bad quickly after you open it. I suggest keeping a bottle of dry vermouth around so you always have something on hand for cooking.
