Air Conditioner Capacitor Cost?
During routine seasonal service of a single family residential air conditioning system, the technician replaced the dual run capacitor (45x7.4 440v) and charged me $232 for the part, over and above the cost of the service visit. Also charged $75 for one lb of freon. He had all the materials on his truck. Is this a reasonable price?

That sounds excessive to me since the technician was there for seasonal service first. When seasonal service is performed under a service agreement, the cost of any repairs or replacement parts is normally considered add on charges. A typical add on charge for a dual run capacitor during normal hours would be in the $140 to $175 range. The actual cost of the capacitor is between $35 and $60 from the parts house. You are paying for the expertise the technician has for making the connections correctly. His labor is worth $75/ hour or more to his employer. Replacing a dual run capacitor takes all of 30 minutes if the technician has any difficulties but that is rarely the case. 10 minutes is more often the case. Refrigeration system are closed circuits. If he had to add refrigerant, there had to be a leak that allowed it lose some. Did he leak test the system? What made him decide it needed that pound?

San Antonio Tx. A capacitor is $19.95 plus Tax. This is for a 45 +5 440/370 Round. CD45+5X440R Rated 85 degrees celsius. Plus I got a lifetime warranty for $3. So, anytime it goes out I get a new one and just pay $3. I bought 4 with warranty because it's a 20 min drive to place to get it.
It's easy to replace the capacitor in your unit. Just make sure your Fan, Common and Herm wires are set right. Make a note of the wire placement before removing. Also check out youtube for other instructions.

$230 is about right for a capacitor installed. You have to realize that part of that price was probably a diagnostic. When it comes to air conditioning companies you get what you pay for. We charge anywhere from $200-300 for capacitor replacements, and that includes the diagnostic. Just because you can change one in 60 seconds doesn't mean that is what you are paying for, the technician should also be checking compressor and fan motor amps, along with making sure there are no burnt or loose wire connections.

Most capacitors are less than $40. Yours is a little uncommon, however it's not that rare. List price for one just like yours at Johnstone (HVAC supply chain): $43.99. That's the price YOU would have paid if you went to the Johnstone counter and bought it for yourself. The installer, who paid wholesale, paid less.
That means you got ripped off on the capacitor.
I think the price you paid on refrigerant is a little stronger than I'm used to but it isn't out of line.

There's just no way you could have reasonably been charged $232 for a capacitor. I (maybe) could charge $75 for the refrigerant installed.... which is what the charge for the capacitor SHOULD be.
The $75 for the refrigerant should have been rolled over into the original service call rate.
Yeah, you were charged too much. I would call the office manger and perhaps the BBB.

That sounds kind of cheap. Here in the washington DC area a dual run cap replacement runs about 600 including the service call and most companies are charging 100 to 125 a pound for r22 freon.
Remember that in home services have extremely high overhead and good hvac techs make 80 to 100k per year in this area at least. Companies that undercharge their customers do not stay in business long.

You got the shaft, the capacitor shouldn't cost over 30 or 40 bucks. At least in this area that is the price and the freon charge wasn't to high.

the best answer is that depending on the demand of ac service in your area the price you got is high end competitive nothing to call the BBB over but HELL that was an expensive repair for the capacitor. how nice was his truck? ( and yes its in the range of what a contractor would charge in california)
