Alarm will not allow me to start my car.?

I have a 1998 Monte Carlo with an after market alarm (with alarm valet hanging under the dash). My battery drained from a light being left on (this has happened before). This time I could not jump start my car because of alarm. I had to disconnect my battery from the terminal in order to charge it up without alarm sounding off. AAA could not jump it because the alarm refused to allow the connection. Now the battery is fully charged but I can not start the engine because the stupid alarm activates the moment the battery is reconnected to the terminal and will not allow the engine to turn over. What to do? IF disconnecting the alarm is the only answer, please tell me how. I have had to charge my battery several times in the past few years and have never had trouble with the alarm.

Update:

Both of these suggestions worked at least one time yesterday. Thank you for your help. The problem still exists but at least now I can turn the engine over. I'm looking for someone who can either disarm the devise or the horn.

Another disarming method that works om SOME alarm systems is:

Key in ignition, turn key to RUN (NOT START, but the position the key normally is in when the engine is running), then back to off, 10 times quickly.

It depends on the alarm. Some of the Vipers (DirectedElectronics) alarms of that era reset by pressing the lock and unlock button together - you may have to play with the remote. I tried disconnecting one of those in my daughter's car and was put off by the complexity of removing it.
