Can you release a baby squirrel into the wild?
My friends found a baby squirrel out in the woods without it's mother, and decided to keep it. It's just started eating solid food, and they said they were going to keep it for 6 weeks or something like that (I don't know the time for sure) and then re-release it back into the wild. I'm worried, because I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't randomly toss a squirrel into the wild after being raised by humans. Not to mention, even before they found it it was super friendly and not at all afraid of us. Part of the reason they picked it up was because it was sitting on a friend's shoe and playing on her leg.
So I need to know: Is it safe to release a squirrel raised entirely by humans into the wild?
And if not, could you please cite a few reliable sources, so that I can prove it to them?

The squirrel needs to be kept in captivity over the winter before it is released, and I would counsel them to release it in their yard or somewhere that they can check on it frequently to be sure it knows how to get food. It isn't going to be afraid of dogs or cats either, so the world is a scary place for a tame squirrel. But they cannot keep it forever, it will get really wild and unhappy once it reaches sexual maturity.
