How do I ask for work experience?

Im in college and to help with my future apprenticeship applications I thought it would be good to try and get some work experience in related areas but I'm not sure how to go about asking businesses if I could do some. Should I call or write a letter or go in myself or something, is there a proper way to go about this? Because some of the places I will be asking at with be very posh/professional where it will really matter

thank you :)

The best thing to do is a combination of both.

First of all list a number of companies that you would like to ask for work experience. Search directories for all local companies.

Next contact the HR person/department of the company you have selected by telephone and just ask the question - Do you take on people for work experience. They may say no, so you can say thank you and cross them off your list.

If they do take people on, ask how they like people to apply for work experience and if there are any closing dates etc.

Most companies will ask you to send in a CV/Resume. Write a covering letter explaining exactly what you are looking for, what you could bring to the company. Thank them for their time in looking at your details.

Some companies may not even respond so you need to send out as many as you can and someone will come back to you.

    Good luck.
