What can i feed my young water turtle? ?

I feed him the normal turtle food from the pet store.. I was just wondering what kind of foods can i give him..? He is in a tank with water and a rock so he can get out.. Do i just chop up some veggies real small and put em in there like the dry food? i like to spoil my pets.. :) We got this little guy from a flea market 1 1/2 years ago. I dont even know what kind of turtle it is.. Not a red ear slider.. Lady at the pet store said he might be a yellowe bellied slider or something like that? idk lol

I had two water turtles and I would mostly feed them water turtle food but when I wanted to give them a treat I would go to the pet store and buy some feeder fish, the smallest ones in the tank and I would put them in the water live. It was so much fun to watch my little turtles chase them all over, it is also great excersise for them. Some pet store give you free baby mollie fish and they like those too. I would also give them grasshoppers but they only ate the abdomen so I would have to fish the rest out when they were through :-) just think of the wild turtles and what they might eat in there normal habitat and have fun experimenting! Sometimes I would also put lettuce on top of the water and they would nibble on the edges.

As suggested already, you can try feeder fish, but only as an occasional treat. Guppies are better than goldfish as those could cause Vitamin A deficiencies. But the best thing is to give your turtle a varied diet with the pellets, lots of veggies, and lots of meat since it's still young. As it gets older it will need less meat and have a mostly veg diet. Cut up veggies into tiny pieces like you said, but also offer dark leafy greens (you can just give him a whole leaf to nibble on and then remove it at the end of the day). For meat, offer live crickets that are smaller than his head, and also mealworms or earthworms (might have to cut up nightcrawlers), and then the occasional (very small) feeder fish. If you don't already have a filter, getting one will greatly improve your turtle's health and make him grow faster. You still need to change the water at least once a week anyway. Since little pieces of veggies and bugs can pollute the tank water a lot quicker than just pellets you might also consider taking him out into a separate container of water (dechlorinated tank water) once a day to get some veggies and bugs, then put him back in his main tank and you can feed him the pellets in there and float a leaf for him to munch on if he gets hungry again.

Aack! No veggies at all until the turtle matures. Forget the commercial food too, except as a supplement. The best foods, IMHO, are liver dusted in bone meal, earthworms, and bait fishes. Young turtles need protein and calcium for growth. The liver also supplies vitamins A & D.

BTW, goldfish, like other minnows, contain thiaminase. They do not affect the vitamin A levels. But they ARE very fatty.
