Difference between a rookie and a first year player?

Notice on rosters (experience) players are listed as R (rookie) and some listed as 1 ...Whats the difference?

Update:

Then how come, for example, the Eagles rookies from last year are listed with 2, not 1. I thought guys listed with "1" were guys who spent the year on the Practice Squad or something.

    I found out for you

R- means they were just drafted out of college

1- means they were not just drafted out of college, but instead maybe played in Europe for a while or got drafted to another program but didnt make the team and then tried out for another team the next year and did make it on the team, so they get a 1 instead of an R.
