You may be confusing it with SM Academy. It's an off-shoot of SM Entertainment that offers dance, vocal, acting, and I believe modeling lessons that you pay for. This is NOT the same as being a trainee. It aims to help you become a trainee, but you would still have to audition for the company.

I wouldn't think that they pay for it, I think they sort of pay them back after they debut with their earnings(plus extra profit). If they had to pay, they would have to pay thousands of dollars, and they'd have almost 0 trainees since most people wouldn't be able to afford it.
