How do I spruce up my blog's look and design?

I'm using (what I believe to be) the best template Blogger had to offer for my blog, but I think if I get a more topical template and some better graphics, it'd attract more readers. Any suggestions?

    Simply getting rid of the white text on black background would make a huge difference.
