Is high mileage oil better than conventional oil for a high mileage car?

My poor baby is 14 yrs. old and has approx. 134,000 miles on it. Do I really need to be using high mileage oil? I drive between 250 - 400 miles a month. Most of the time I drive in city traffic with a lot of stop & go. If it matters, my car is a 5 speed. Also, are there any reasonably priced products that will help keep my engine clean and running well?

Once again we suffer through Robert's Recommendations. We'll guaranty the manufacturer didn't recommend 0W-30.

Full synthetic motor oil will keep the inside of the motor clean and the engine will start easier in cold weather. High mileage oil will slow down very small oil leaks and is advertised to keep oil seals and gaskets soft and pliable. There is absolutely no other reason to use high priced, high mileage oil.

Some of that is pure HYPE, but it depends on WHO made the engine and car in the first place MOdern engines are very stingy with fuel and less carbon is made The BEST thing to do is to read your MANUAL about OIL SPECIFICATION NUMBERS> This is MORE important than even VISCOSITY ratings. The NAME of your car should appear on the oil LABEL! most times. I tis nearly ALWYS bsest to use a quality MOTOR FLUSH and then switch over toa SYNTHETIC like MOBIL ONE 0W_30. IT will CLEAN the engine as you drive, inplrove POWER and mileage, and ptrotect your engine beraings best on the COLDEST start-ups in the dea of winter because it COATS the bearings and prevents dry starting! GOOD LUCK!!

there is a good oil additive on market that keeps the oil up high in the engine .i find it very good indeed .if you change oil regular even with 134k on mileage the engine will be in good nick some people never chang oil at regular interval that is bad news for the engine .i have done 137 thousand on mine and it runs brand new only because i maintain it very well .all the best .

  • the formulation of the oil is designed to allow the seals and gaskets regain some of the flexibility that was lost due ot age, heat and the chemicals in the oil as it is. i worked for a company that uses it and i have not heard anything bad about it yet. its not so much keeping it running clean but minimizing the oil leaks and wear on the engine components really.

Why do you think they make high mileage oil? Of course it's better for high mileage vehicles! Change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles to keep the motor clean!

I don't consider 134k as high mileage anymore but...

whatever you are using and doing now GOT you to that mileage...just stick with what you've been using & doing.
