If you are talking about a colonoscopy (UK) or Gastroscopy (Endoscopy) then you will probably be given some mild sedation providing there are reasons you can't have sedation (which is fairly rare) as both are uncomfortable. With a colonoscopy you will be given medication to take before the event and if you don't take it, then the hospital will not do it. However, depending on what is wrong with you, I'd recommend you have these done if your doctor has deemed it necessary, as precancerous polyps can be removed or ulcers found and treated.
