Old revolver, 5-screw S&W?

Hi guys. I just lucked into an old S&W snubbie. 5-screw blue .38 special. 6-shot, Square butt, original Magna stocks. Barrel is so short it's almost not even there. Round front sight, not the ramp. Pristine condition, chambers and bore are mirror bright. I'm embarrassed to tell you how little I paid for this little gem. You guys know I'm all about the Colts, but I am clueless about this Smith. It's adorable, but is it worth a lot of money? I believe it's called a pre-Model 10. But then what model is it?

Thanks guys. I checked inside the crane, and I didn't see a model number. There IS a very lightly struck 6 and 3 on the frame above the 5-digit serial number. But i'm not sure it's a model number. Also there is a 6-digit number struck on the butt strap, and under the barrel, right where it would be covered by the dinky ejector rod with the crane closed. Maybe police arsenal marks or something. And Jeff, I did pay considerably less than 550 bucks. So I feel very fortunate. All good answers.

    If it is actually a pre-model 10, they were called Military and Police.

    I don't see any special notation regarding availability of snubbies, but according to the article, S&W went to the numerical model designations in 1957, so your revolver may have been made just before that.

    Going by memory... The extra screw were eliminated by the mid 50's too.

    If its got a hump back hammer --- it's pre 40's

    You paid less than $550 you did well- based on your description.
