i lost my best friend today :(?

So today me and my family decided it was time to take our dog to get put down he was a 14 year old collie/retriver the most lovin dog you could of ever met but now i feel so bad about doin it i really wish we dident but that would just of been selfish of me right? the problem with him was his back legs was startin to go and he would fall over now and again he could never stand up in time to go to the toilet so would end up peein a little we first noticed this a month ago and we thought well he is gettin on abit so we kept an eye on him he did that only a couple of times after but im guessin because he was old and all he did was lay around all day he just dident have the strenght to do it

As the weeks went on he started doin it more often then last night really got to me i let him out the back to go toilet and the poor thing couldent even hold himself up to have a poo he fell over in it thats when i knew he had to go right? i really dont know if it was the right choice i cant change it now its done and his gone

was i wrong to do it or not i really dont know now :(

Update:

Yeah over the last week he would just lay there and not move even if i offerd treats or a walk he wouldent go for ethier then last few days would just start cryin randomly for no reason :(

Update 2:

I guess you guys are right he would of just got worse with time atleast i did it when he was still the same dog with the same personality i fell for when i first picked him at the rehomin center he was such an abused pup bless him :( i offerd him a warm lovin family and he was such a spoilt dog at christmas he got more presents than any of us lol :) such a greatful dog aswell i will miss him so much

You did the right thing. Part of our contract we make when we get a dog is to put them out of their misery when their pain becomes too extreme for them to manage. He is thankful for what you did and is now in a pain free place. We are both in the same boat, I lost my old dog of 17 years about 3 weeks ago, he wen't out in his sleep. The pain was terrible, but I know my pal is home under the Rainbow Bridge.

You did the best thing for him. It is always hard, but you never want to see your buddy suffer. Your dog was suffering, and you did the responsible, loving thing by ending that. Trust me, the dog would thank you. I know how hard this is. I lost my dog 2 years ago and it still feels like just yesterday. He was 18 years old (I got him when I was 3) and he was suffering with congestive heart failure, epilepsy, and a brain tumor. It was so difficult to put him down, but it was a relief to know that he would not hurt any more. Just hold on to the memories. I don't know what your beliefs are, but I think that all of the friends (4 legged and 2 alike) that we have lost in this lifetime will be reunited with us one day. Don't think of it as "goodbye." Instead, think of it as, "see you later." Good luck to you and keep your chin up.

I believe you did the right thing. When I question if an animals should or shouldn't have been put down I try to look at it a certain way. Would he have lived this long in the wild? Animals don't live as long in the wild as they do in our homes because we are able to feed them and give them medicine. In the wild once the start getting to old they die. He wouldn't have gotten that way in the wild. So I wouldn't feel bad.He lived a long happy life with you. He was suffering and that's why he couldn't go to the restroom right. It just hurt to bad. You helped him and did the right thing.

Ben, your faithful dog will thank you. You did the RIGHT thing.

You saved your dog from the indignities of old age. This is a dog that would cringe at misbehaving in the house. Their bodies have let them down not their minds!

Take comfort in that your dog lived a grand life with you and it was time to let go.

    I am so sorry,

I'm sorry... You did the right thing, if he could talk he would tell you he wanted it that way and he would thank you. We had to do that for our old Lab when she could no longer walk and couldn't hold her bladder. It's the responsible thing to do, so they don't have to be in pain anymore.

EDIT - Read this sweetie. It's a beautiful poem about coping with the loss of your dog.

Your collie was needlessly suffering with no likely chance of recovery. You acted with love and compassion by allowing him to pass with dignity. You did the right thing and he's forever grateful.

You did do the right thing. It was obvious he was in pain, and now he is relieved of it. It is hard to let go of a pet, but just know that you won't have to watch him suffer anymore. :)

I remember seeing a question similar to this :) You didn't do anything wrong. You tried, and that is a good thing. Everyone dies and it is very depressing. But we have to deal with it. I know your doggy will miss you dearly and he loves you so very much. Don't be sad ^_^
