Nice matchup. I gotta give it to Baer. I really think the Klitshko brothers are horribly overrated anyway. Baer was an animal. The man killed Frankie Cambell in the ring. He was never the same fighter after that because it haunted him. (Regardless of what Cinderella Man says) But before that he was feared. Like Tyson used to be.

This won't be a standard answer but Klitschko knocks Baer out in 7 rounds. Klitschko has decent energy and an above natural jab. Baer didn't train competently and wasted his profession like Bonavena did. Klitschko appears to have each factor stepping into his want at the present time.

Good fight. Baer was a reasonably sized heavyweight with a good chin and a great right hand. With Klitschko's suspect chin I think that Baer could well score a big KO if his right connected with Klitschko's jaw. However Klitschko is very good defensively and Baer was known to clown. He did also swing with that right hand and leave himself open so I think that Klitschko could avoid it without many problems and counter. A more likely result would be Baer on the end of Klitschko's jab all throughout the fight.
Barring a Baer right hand I would pick Klitschko by clear decision.

I have to agree with hairydude. It would be an interesting match up with Baer's aggressive style and power, but I think that Wladamir's jab might keep him off balance and prevent him from getting too many chances to through those big hay-makers. If Baer can't catch Klitschko early, then I see it a decision for the Ukranian.

Funny you should mention the Carnera fight, I'm just thinking about that one too. That was, as you know the highlight of Baer's career. But, in all honesty, when you watch it, tell me what you see? Because, what I DON'T see there is boxing. As a matter of fact, that can by no stretch of an imagination be referred to as boxing. That was a street thug beating up some unfortunate bouncer outside of a night club.
And that's exactly what Max Baer was, a thug of the street in good physical condition and one of the most, if not the most overrated boxer of all time. His era, so the time between Gene Tunney retirement and the rise of Joe Louis, was the absolute rock bottom of heavyweight division and, if he was fighting in any other period, with his skill set, he wouldn't even come close to title contention, let alone become a world champion.
Take a look at what he does in the ring. All he's got is that looping overhand right. Literally, what else does he have? He's got no technique, no defense, no footwork, no tactical skills of any kind, no combination punching, just nothing. The most basic and rudimentary necessities any real boxer is supposed to have - he lacks them all.
One time in his life, he took on a real opponent and did you see what happened? He was completely dominated and so hopelessly outclassed, it wasn't even funny. The truth is, he was totally unfit to even work as Joe Louis' sparring partner, much less take him on in a fight. And the exact same thing would have happened to him against any real heavyweight champion, including Wladimir Klitschko.
You take Carnera as a point of reference, but, other then height, do you see some similarities between him and Wladimir perhaps? Cause I sure don't.
First of all, Wladimir Klitschko is one of the most perfectly trained athletes in history of any sport, not just boxing. Secondly, alongside Joe Louis, he is the most technical and most fundamentally sound heavyweight of all time. He is completely superior to Max Baer in every single conceivable aspect of this sport and difference in skill level and boxing talent between them is so overwhelming, you can't even make a serious comparison. Anything Baer can do in the ring, Klitschko does it at least five times better.
If this match had ever happened it would have been a complete domination from bell to bell and typical, methodical Wladimir Klitschko beatdown, just like we're used to seeing. Baer would fail to land a punch in this fight.
Klitschko by KO in 6.
